Personalized care for expectant mothers

When you choose to give birth at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, we’ll work closely with you to develop a delivery plan that matches your needs, preferences, and cultural values. Our OB/GYNs may collaborate with midwives, doulas, lactation consultants, and other specialists to ensure you have the healthiest labor and delivery possible.

We also offer group prenatal care through Centering Pregnancy, a program designed for expectant mothers seeking peer support, more face time with providers, and active engagement in their pregnancy experience. Our program takes place at the Center for Community Health and is facilitated by dedicated nurse practitioners and midwives. We offer:

Small, supportive groups of about 6 to 10 women due around the same time
Extended visits (120 minutes each), which include 10x more time with your provider than traditional prenatal care visits
One-on-one health assessments combined with group education
Discussions on everything from nutrition to newborn care

Built to enhance the comfort of patients and their support partners, our renovated, spacious rooms come at no additional cost and feature:

Early Pregnancy Unit at CCH

Located at the Center for Community Health, our Early Pregnancy Unit is designed to provide timely, specialized care for patients in their first trimester (under 12 weeks). Our team is highly skilled in evaluating and treating expectant mothers with early pregnancy symptoms, including abdominal pain, pelvic pain, and vaginal bleeding or spotting. With expertise in early pregnancy and family planning, we’re equipped to address a variety of concerns such as pregnancy viability and ectopic pregnancies. Our unit offers:

What should I bring to the hospital?

DO bring:

Photo ID and health insurance card
Eyeglasses/contacts and care items
We provide basic toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, soap, shampoo, etc.), but you may prefer to bring your own
Bathrobe, nightgown, slippers, comfy change of clothes (nonslip socks are provided)
Loose, comfortable clothes for postpartum that you don’t mind getting dirty
We provide hospital gowns, disposable underwear, witch hazel pads, vaginal ice packs, and bathrobes
Pillow, music, and/or tablet and headphones
Reading materials if you are being induced
We have birthing balls available in every birthing room, but you are welcome to bring your own
Clothes for your baby to go home in
For your support person: camera, charger/batteries, toiletries, comfortable shoes, a change of clothes and pajamas if staying overnight, snacks, reading material, money for parking, food and vending machines

Note: While at the hospital, please place all of your bags in the closet provided to keep the floors clear of hazards.

DO NOT bring:

Jewelry/valuables
Breast pump
Hair dryer
Appliances
Candles (Flameless candles are allowed)
Diapers
Pads
Car seat — you do not need this until you are being discharged (and it is not a necessity for discharge i.e. if you do not have a car)

Note: No flowers or balloons are permitted on Labor & Delivery at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital; you may have them in your room on postpartum.

How long will I stay in the hospital after giving birth?

The average length of stay at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist for a vaginal birth is approximately 24-48 hours after delivery. The average length of stay for a cesarean delivery is approximately 48-72 hours after delivery.

Does my baby need to leave the hospital in a car seat?

If you are going home in your own car, yes. If you do not have a car, your baby does not need to leave the hospital in a car seat. We recommend bringing a stroller before discharge.

Can my baby be with me in my room at all times?

At NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist, we encourage “rooming-in” to keep your baby with you during your stay as a way for you to bond with your baby, learn your baby’s hunger cues, and feed on demand. Babies typically feed more than 8 times each 24-hour day for the first several weeks, and rooming in lets you respond easily and quickly when your baby shows hunger cues.

When are circumcisions done (if desired)?

NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital offers circumcision after the baby is cleared by a pediatrician and prior to discharge. Please check with your provider to see if circumcision will be performed on an outpatient basis or during your hospital stay.

What is your visitation policy?

Labor & Delivery: You may have three adult visitors at the bedside 24/7. This is inclusive of your partner and doula, if you have an outside doula. You may alternate your visitors. *Note: if you are having a scheduled cesarean section, one adult visitor is allowed to accompany you in the PACU and OR. Your additional visitors are welcome once you have been transferred to the postpartum unit.

Postpartum: You may have three visitors (children or adults) at the bedside, inclusive of your partner and doula, if you're working with an outside doula. One adult visitor is allowed to stay with you 24/7, while visiting hours for additional guests are 9 am - 9 pm.

Does the hospital provide maternity unit tours?

To schedule a tour of the labor and delivery and postpartum units at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, please email [email protected] or call 646-675-2978. We offer a newborn care class that includes breastfeeding techniques directly after the tour. Up to 2 adults are permitted to attend the tour. Registration is required, and space is limited.
