Supportive rehabilitation care in your neighborhood

Whether you’re recovering from a stroke, managing cancer, or healing from a sports injury, our rehabilitation experts in Brooklyn are here to help you maximize your function, independence, and quality of life. Our multidisciplinary team, inclusive of physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists, provides exceptional rehabilitation services for both children and adults.

NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital is home to a dedicated inpatient rehabilitation unit offering comprehensive treatment — including occupational, neuropsychology, and recreational therapies — for brain and spine injuries, amputations, fractures, and other complex issues. In addition, patients can access our rehabilitation services on an outpatient basis at convenient locations throughout the borough.

For patients requiring physical therapy, we use a variety of techniques to help improve mobility, build strength, and relieve pain. Our department has a wide range of specialty programs to help support your recovery, such as rehabilitation for spine, neurologic, orthopedic, pulmonary, and pelvic-related conditions.

Acute inpatient rehabilitation

Our dedicated inpatient rehabilitation unit, recognized by The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), is located within our hospital, so you have seamless access to world-class physicians when needed. At our 25-bed facility, we provide supportive therapies for patients recovering from stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputations, orthopedic surgery, cardiac surgery, cancer, and more. Patients in our inpatient rehabilitation unit benefit from a multispecialty team of providers — including nurses, social workers, and therapists — who work collaboratively to address their care from all angles.

Outpatient rehabilitation services

The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) offers outpatient services across several practice locations in Brooklyn. Our focus is entirely on restoring function, managing pain, and improving quality of life. Our board-certified physiatrists specialize in diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system, brain, spine, back, nerves, joints, muscles and sports-related ailments. We personalize treatment plans that may involve medications, electromyography to pinpoint the source of impairment or pain, therapeutic exercises, joint and soft-tissue injections, ultrasound-guided procedures, and more.

Speech language pathology

Our speech-language pathologists offer one-on-one therapy sessions to assess, diagnose, and treat communication and swallowing disorders. We also have a multidisciplinary clinic staffed by ENT specialists, designed to help assess and treat swallowing or communication difficulties like voice disorders and head and neck cancers. These services include Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES), total laryngectomies and tracheoesophageal prostheses, IOPI (Iowa Oral Performance Instrument), and TEP exchanges.

Occupational therapy

We offer expert occupational therapy for patients continuing their recovery or managing long-term conditions. Our outpatient services include treatment for chronic pain, neurological conditions, Parkinson’s disease, and other movement disorders. We also provide advanced stroke care approaches, such as the Vivistim Paired VNS system, to help improve upper limb function following ischemic stroke. Additionally, our board-certified hand therapists provide advanced care for injuries and conditions affecting the hands, wrists, elbows, and shoulders.

Pediatric therapy services

Our experts in Brooklyn offer comprehensive occupational, physical, and speech-language therapies to support development in children of all ages – from infancy through adolescence. If your child is struggling with movement, motor skills, or other functions due to injury, illness, or congenital conditions, we are here to provide thorough evaluation and treatment options. Our areas of expertise include autism, ADHD, behavior problems, torticollis/plagiocephaly, transition from NICU care, and sensory processing disorder. We also provide therapies for children with neurological conditions like cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, seizure disorders/epilepsy, and pediatric stroke.
