Life Begins: Childbirth Services

Notice

Out of an abundance of caution, to reduce gatherings of large groups, we are suspending live maternity tours and classes for obstetric patients at all NewYork-Presbyterian locations. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience, and as always, we will continue to prioritize your health and safety.

Please note that your prenatal visits and other medical appointments will continue to proceed as usual.

If you have any questions, please speak with your medical provider.

Thank you very much for your patience and understanding as we continue to work to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients and their families.

Maternal child health services

Since the 1880s, thousands of Brooklyn families have chosen to receive obstetric and neonatal care at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. The birth of a child is one of the most memorable experiences in life, and we are proud to share this experience with you. The Department of Maternal Child Health provides a full complement of services for the thousands of mothers and babies each year. Our services are designed to allow patients to experience a family centered birth in a warm, friendly and safe environment.

Family centered care

Virtual Prenatal Class flyerNYP Brooklyn Methodist Hospital offers a family-centered birth experience, allowing the family to experience the entire birth process — labor, delivery, and recovery — in a single area that can comfortably accommodate family members and caregivers, including physicians, midwives, nurses and technicians.

Following the recovery period, in the birthing room for natural deliveries or in the recovery room for cesareans, the parent and baby are transferred, via a private elevator, to the mother/baby unit for the remainder of their Hospital stay. Babies who need more intensive care stay in our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital strongly supports the active participation of family in the care of the newborn. We encourage patients to keep their newborns at the bedside throughout the day and night. We believe families belong together for support and assistance. Many parents have less fear and anxiety when their newborns are rooming in, and this allows them to learn as much about their baby's sleeping and feeding habits as possible before going home. Studies show that infants cry less in their birthing parent's presence and have lower blood pressure and more stable temperature, pulse, and respirations.

Our OB/GYNs offer prenatal care and our maternal-fetal specialists offer high-risk obstetrical care. Prenatal testing and antepartum fetal testing are available on the Hospital campus.
