Care for Newborns

Nursery

A newborn at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital who does not require special care may, at the request of the mother, stay in her room. Nurses and pediatricians examine the baby at bedside. At other times, babies can be cared for in the 42-bassinet newborn nursery, staffed with pediatricians and nurses.

Transitional Care Nursery

This 8-bed nursery is designed for infants who are not quite ready to go home and may need additional medical care. A multi-disciplinary team of pediatricians, neonatologists and nurse practitioners work with parents to address the babies' medical, feeding and developmental needs and assist in preparing the family for the child's return home.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

The 18-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is classified as Level III, which means it is staffed and equipped to care for newborns who need intensive medical attention, including those born extremely prematurely and those requiring and recovering from surgery. It is staffed by full-time board-certified neonatologists and specially trained registered nurses who, in addition to caring for the tiny patients, are dedicated to helping parents cope with difficulties during their child's hospitalization.
