DO I HAVE TO LIKE SCIENCE TO APPLY?
Yes! All students who apply should have a strong interest in science or medicine.
DO I HAVE TO BECOME A DOCTOR?
No! While the Program cultivates an interest in the health science professions, Lang Youth Scholars do not have to become doctors or nurses. The ultimate goal is to help Scholars become college-bound and fulfill their career aspirations.
DO I HAVE TO PAY TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM?
No! Lang Youth relies solely on philanthropy to sustain its operations and activities throughout all six years of a scholar's participation.
DO I HAVE TO COMMIT FOR ALL SIX YEARS?
Yes! The only point of entry for the program is the 6th grade. Scholars are expected to remain in the Program for six years.
WHAT ARE THE ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS?
Students who apply should: (1) attend a public middle school in Washington Heights/Inwood; (2) maintain an overall grade point average of 80% in core subjects; (3) earn 3's and 4's in the math and ELA statewide exams; and (4) have an excellent attendance record. Students who meet the admissions profile should submit an application through their school, which includes two student essays, one parent statement, and two teacher recommendations.
WHAT QUALITIES ARE YOU LOOKING FOR IN A LANG SCHOLAR?
The Lang Youth Program is looking for committed, motivated, and intelligent students who are passionate about their education and are dedicated to learning. Lang Youth Scholars must exemplify the NYP and Lang Values of Empathy, Excellence, Innovation, Respect, Responsibility, and Teamwork. They must also be active members of their community. Ideal candidates should have diverse interests, including a passion for science. They should enjoy hands-on learning and working with their peers.
