Virtual Urgent Care is a video appointment with a board-certified Columbia or Weill Cornell emergency medicine physician that takes place through your phone, tablet, or computer. A Virtual Urgent Care visit is useful when you have a non-life-threatening medical concern that needs urgent attention. You can see a doctor within minutes or the same day, 7 days a week.

When Should I Use Virtual Urgent Care?

Virtual Urgent Care is appropriate when you have a medical concern that needs attention, but it does not replace emergency care for life-threatening situations such as major bleeding, heart attack, or stroke. If you are experiencing emergency symptoms please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. Although it does not substitute routine in-person care, patients may find Virtual Urgent Care a more convenient option than in-person visits for a wide variety of urgent, but non-emergency conditions.

Pediatric Virtual Urgent Care

Pediatric Virtual Urgent Care is helpful for common medical conditions in children that don’t require emergency care, such as a cold, cough, fever, stomachache, and other medical issues. Many sick children can be better served if the pediatric emergency medicine physician sees them from their home, where they are more comfortable.

Payment Options for Online Urgent Care

Insurance

Virtual Urgent Care is covered by most insurance plans. We ask that you verify you have telemedicine coverage as part of your plan. For plans we accept, your copay, co-insurance, deductibles, and all other procedures or treatment not covered by your insurance plan are your responsibility and will be billed directly to you.

Self-Pay

Insurance is not required to connect with our doctors. You have the option to self-pay for this service by using one of the following:

  • Credit Card
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA) Card
  • Health Spending Account (HSA) Card

The self-pay cost for a Virtual Urgent Care visit is $149.

How to Schedule an Online Urgent Care Video Visit

To schedule your Virtual Urgent Care appointment on your mobile or tablet, you must download and install the NYP Connect® app. Then, follow the steps to schedule the virtual urgent care appointment.

If a person is having Virtual Urgent Care with a pediatrician for their child, the child will need to have their own Connect account. A child cannot be seen via his or her parents’ Connect account.

For desktop access, please login through the link, hit Sign Up (No Activation Code), and follow a similar workflow to schedule an appointment.

To schedule your appointment via the NYP Connect® app on your smartphone or on a desktop, please follow these steps:

  1. Launch the NYP Connect® app and select Virtual Urgent Care (on desktop once signed into Connect, click on Menu and under "Find Care" section select "Virtual Urgent Care with Emergency Physicians")
  2. Follow the steps to schedule the appointment including selecting the doctor and appointment time, and entering the patient’s information and symptoms
  3. Schedule the appointment
  4. Log on about 15 minutes before your appointment and complete the eCheck-in process
  5. Start your virtual appointment with the doctor
  6. Receive the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment plan from the doctor you spoke with

Do I need to enroll to have a visit?

Yes, enrollment in NYP Connect® is required before starting a Virtual Urgent Care visit, and it’s free to enroll. Enrollment only takes a few minutes and is required before starting your visit.

Can I get a prescription if needed?

Yes, medications may be provided if the doctor decides this is an appropriate course of treatment. Like an in-person appointment, the prescription will be delivered to the pharmacy of your choice, and sent on the same day. Please note, prescriptions for controlled substances are not written.

What technology is required for a Virtual Urgent Care visit?

In order to use this service, you will need: 

  • A webcam and a microphone 
  • Broadband internet, with a minimum bandwidth of 3.0 Mb/s 
  • Latest versions of: Google Chrome, Apple Safari, Mozilla Firefox, or Microsoft Edge
  • Windows 10 or later 
  • Mac OS10.13 or newer 
  • Up to date Adobe Flash Plug In 
  • If on a tablet or mobile device, you will need the NYP Connect® app

What will happen during my visit?

Once you are enrolled, your Virtual Urgent Care visit begins with a few short questions about the reason for your visit as well as your personal information. You will then be connected to a doctor who will evaluate your symptoms and discuss treatment options with you. Your visit will typically last about 15 minutes.

Is my visit private and secure?

Ensure that you are starting your virtual urgent care visit in a well-lit, private space. NYP respects and upholds patient confidentiality with respect to protected health information as outlined by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, and, subject to HIPAA regulations, will obtain express patient consent prior to sharing any patient-identifiable information to a third party for purposes other than treatment, payment or health care operations.
