The Commission on Cancer (CoC), a quality program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), has granted Three-Year Accreditation with Commendation to NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital’s Cheryl R. Lindenbaum Comprehensive Cancer Center.

To earn voluntary CoC accreditation, a cancer program must meet 34 quality care standards, be evaluated every three years through a survey process, and maintain levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive patient-centered care. Three-Year Accreditation with Commendation is only awarded to a facility that exceeds standard requirements at the time of its triennial survey.

“We are extremely proud of the team at NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital’s Cheryl R. Lindenbaum Comprehensive Cancer Center for their dedication to offering our patients the very best care,” said Stacey Petrower, president of NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital. “This accreditation is a testament to our continued commitment to bringing high-quality, multidisciplinary, patient-centered cancer care to our community.”

The CoC Accreditation program provides the framework for an organization to enhance its quality of patient care through various cancer-related programs that focus on the full spectrum of cancer care including prevention, early diagnosis, cancer staging, optimal treatment, rehabilitation, lifelong follow-up for recurrent disease, and end-of-life care. When patients receive care at a CoC facility, they also have access to information on clinical trials and new treatments, genetic counseling, and patient-centered services including psychosocial support, a patient navigation process, and a survivorship care plan that documents the care each patient receives and seeks to improve cancer survivors’ quality of life.

The NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital Cheryl R. Lindenbaum Comprehensive Cancer Center’s team of physician experts from Columbia University Irving Medical Center provides patients and their families with personalized attention and the highest quality medical care in a warm and nurturing environment. The entire hospital team, made up of highly skilled and compassionate medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiologists, social workers, and therapists, takes a multidisciplinary approach to treating this complex group of diseases. Together, they develop a care plan that is tailored to a patient’s cancer, its stage and unique needs. The cancer center provides a comprehensive menu of services from prevention to diagnosis, to advanced treatments and survivorship. The center also provides patients with access to an extraordinary level of expertise and resources, including oncologists from the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center.

Like all CoC-accredited facilities, NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital maintains a cancer registry and contributes data to the National Cancer Data Base (NCDB), a joint program of the CoC and American Cancer Society. This nationwide oncology outcomes database is the largest clinical disease registry in the world. Data on all types of cancer are tracked and analyzed through the NCDB and used to explore trends in cancer care. CoC-accredited cancer centers, in turn, have access to information derived from this type of data analysis, which is used to create national, regional, and state benchmark reports. These reports help CoC facilities with their quality improvement efforts.

Key members of the leadership team from NewYork-Presbyterian Medical Group Westchester and Columbia University Irving Medical Center were crucial in bringing the cancer center to this new level of designation. The center previously received accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC).
