Colorectal Surgery

Colorectal surgeons treat disorders affecting the colon, rectum, and anus. Examples include the surgical treatment of colon cancer, rectal cancer, anal cancer and fissures, certain types of hemorrhoids that cannot be successfully treated using other treatment methods, diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease (including ulcerative colitis and Crohn's), and other colorectal diseases. Patients who need a temporary or permanent ostomy (a bag worn on the outside of the abdomen to collect waste) benefit from the education and support of specially trained ostomy nurses. The colorectal surgeons of NewYork-Presbyterian Medical Group Westchester are highly experienced in performing a wide range of colorectal operations, including laparoscopic, robotic, and open abdominal surgeries for colorectal cancer and benign disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease. They also perform complex reconstructive surgeries, such as creating a new "pouch" from intestinal tissue to replace a colon or rectum that has been surgically removed due to disease.
