Dr. Ellen Scherl Receives Distinguished Physician Award from Crohn's and Colitis Foundation

Ellen J. Scherl, MD, has received the 2017 Distinguished Physician Award from the Long Island chapter of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. Dr. Scherl received his honor in recognition of her care for patients and passion for research and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Dr. Scherl is the Jill Roberts Professor of Inflammatory Bowel Disease and a Professor of Clinical Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine, and an Attending Physician at the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Dr. Scherl is the Director of The Jill Roberts Center for Inflammatory Bowel Disease, a clinical program committed to the interdisciplinary care of patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. The center’s approach pays attention nutrition, colon cancer prevention, osteoporosis, nephrology, and potential extraintestinal manifestations of IBD in its treatment strategies. The Jill Roberts Center also partners with its sister program, the Jill Roberts Institute for Research in IBD, to achieve better understanding of the origins of IBD and to test theories of why it appears.

Dr. Scherl’s research work extends beyond her collaboration with the Institute to include the establishment of an IBD tissue bank at the Weill Cornell Medicine, the identification a novel E. Coli bacteria associated with Crohn's Disease, and the development and analysis of new IBD treatment protocols.

Dr. Scherl will receive this honor at the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation’s Long Island chapter’s annual Toast to Tomorrow event on Thursday, November 16th in Roslyn Harbor, NY. 100% of proceeds from this event will support IBD research. More information on this event is available here.
