Pediatric pulmonologists from Columbia and Weill Cornell Medicine provide specialized testing and novel therapies for respiratory disorders in children of all ages. Through major centers in cystic fibrosis, asthma, sleep disorders, and aerodigestive and neuromuscular disorders, physicians at the Children's Hospital of New York partner with the patient and their parents to personalize treatment, including participation in clinical trials of the latest therapies, with the goal of helping young patients lead a normal and healthy childhood.

On this episode of Advances in Care, Erin Welsh is joined by Dr. Lawrence Lustig, chair of the Department of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia. Dr. Lustig has spent decades working to advance various interventions to treat genetic hearing loss and after years of research his team was the first to show that gene therapies could be effective at reversing genetic hearing loss in mouse models and eventually, humans. In April 2026, the FDA approved the first ever gene therapy for genetic deafness based on the work pushed forward by Dr. Lustig.
