Frequently asked questions about midwives

What type of training and qualifications does a midwife have?

In the U.S., many midwives are Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) who hold both a nursing license and a graduate degree (Master’s or Doctorate) in midwifery. Midwives may also be “Certified Midwives.”

How do midwives help during childbirth?

Midwives can provide clinical and/or emotional support during labor. They monitor the health of the parent and baby, perform exams, and facilitate the delivery. Their approach emphasizes low-intervention care, focusing on natural pain management and movement, though they can provide medical interventions or epidurals when necessary in hospital settings.

Can I work with a midwife if I have a high-risk pregnancy?

At NewYork-Presbyterian, our midwives work with pregnant patients who are considered low-risk. However, some midwives can work in collaboration with OB/GYNs to manage high-risk cases. In this "collaborative care" model, the midwife provides personalized support and wellness care, while the physician manages the specific medical complications.

Are midwives and doulas the same?

No. Midwives are medical providers who deliver the baby and are responsible for the clinical safety of the birth. Doulas are non-medical support professionals who help provide comfort, emotional encouragement, and advocacy, but do not perform medical tasks.
