Surgery, Trauma, and Emergency Medicine

Summer STEM Program

Our 2026 summer program for students, held at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, focuses on the medicine of trauma resuscitation and the prevention of life-threatening injuries. This program is open to New York City high school students (those entering 10th, 11th, or 12th grades in September 2026), and offers a great opportunity for teens interested in medicine, healthcare, and student leadership.

Participating students will enroll in Iona University for a three-credit course at a special tuition rate of $100 per credit. College credits are transferable following typical guidelines. 

 

Program dates

July 7 - 30
Tues, Weds, Thurs every week
10 am - 4 pm every day

Attendance is mandatory for all 12 sessions.

  • Introduction to human anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, trauma resuscitation
  • Suicide awareness and prevention  
  • Training in Stop the Bleed and CPR  
  • Naloxone training (Opioid overdose)
  • Skills labs: Suturing, neurosurgery, surgical procedures, and more
  • Visit Iona University to meet with Admissions and Financial Aid, tour campus, and attend healthcare program lab sessions
  • Social determinants of health
  • Gun related violence prevention
  • Intimate partner violence prevention and healthy relationships  
  • Hear from survivors and families of those lost to firearm violence, suicide, distracted/drunk driving, burns, and traumatic brain injury
  • Healthcare leadership and career exploration 
  • Hear from healthcare professionals in Emergency Medicine, Trauma Surgery, Neurosurgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and other fields
