About Our Program

At NewYork-Presbyterian Queens, experienced pediatric surgeons can perform inpatient and outpatient elective and emergency operations for children of all ages, including newborns. Here, children with a wide range of pediatric surgical conditions can receive excellent care before, during, and after surgery.

Surgical care for children is provided by multidisciplinary teams consisting of specialists in pediatric anesthesiology, neonatology, pediatric radiology, and child life. Together they work to deliver a level of service and quality that marks us among the country’s top programs. Adjuncts to the surgical care of children are also provided by interventional radiology and other pediatric specialists.

Beginning in the earliest stages of life, we closely collaborate with specialists at NewYork-Presbyterian’s John Thain Center for Prenatal Pediatrics and the NewYork-Presbyterian & Weill Cornell Medicine Fetal Care Center. Our surgeons have a robust antenatal program for counseling pregnant women and their families for potential surgical conditions diagnosed in utero. Our pediatric surgeons participate in monthly prenatal conferences and multidisciplinary conferences with pediatric cardiology, radiology, neonatology, and maternal-fetal medicine specialists.

Complex newborn, colorectal, neurosurgical, heart, ENT, and lung surgeries are performed at NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Children’s Hospital. Whether your child has surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens or NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Children’s Hospital, our team will see your child for follow-up appointments at Queens for your convenience.

Where appropriate and feasible, virtual visits are an option for some patients.

Coordinated Care for Feeding Tube Patients

At NewYork-Presbyterian Medical Group Queens Fresh Meadows location, children with feeding tubes need to see their care team every few weeks. We developed an integrated program where children with feeding tubes can see their surgeon, gastroenterologist, and feeding tube specialist simultaneously in one room. This unique approach makes care convenient for you and your child and reduces the risk of complications.

Pediatric Emergency and Inpatient Care

Children who have surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens benefit from smooth coordination between pediatric surgeons and the teams in the hospital’s other pediatric units, including:

  • A dedicated Pediatric Emergency Department led by the largest group of physicians in Queens who are board-certified in Pediatric Emergency Medicine and have years of experience in pediatric emergency care.
  • Our state-of-the-art Pediatric Intermediate Care Unit (PIMU) is a five-bed unit that serves acutely ill children and others who need more frequent monitoring. Some children stay in the PIMU after surgery.
  • The family-centered Pediatric Inpatient Unit is specially designed for children and adolescents. It features care provided by specialized pediatric and subspecialty physicians, pediatric nurses, social workers, and other staff who work together to meet your child’s physical, emotional, and social needs.
  • Our 14-bed Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is staffed by board-certified neonatologists and nurses, physician assistants, respiratory therapists, and other team members who provide specialized care for pre-term infants.

Uniquely designed to ease your anxieties and those of your child and other family members, our approach to family-centered is designed to make every child and family’s visit with us as easy and as comfortable as possible. In most cases, you can accompany your child into the operating room and stay until they are asleep.

For safety reasons, you cannot stay during the actual surgery. When the operation has been completed, we will bring you to the recovery room so that you can be with your child as they awaken from anesthesia.
