Pediatric Emergency Care

A trip to the emergency room can be a stressful time for both the child and the family.

When your child comes to the NewYork-Presbyterian Queens Pediatric Emergency Department, our team of highly trained pediatric emergency staff is ready to help you and your child feel safe and to provide clinical care with compassion and comfort. We will care for your child in one of our child-friendly treatment areas, designed to make your stay less intimidating.

A Team of Specialists

Our highly skilled professionals offer pediatric emergency treatment 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our team includes:

  • The largest group of physicians in Queens who are board-certified in Pediatric Emergency Medicine and have years of experience in pediatric emergency care.
  • A dedicated pediatric radiologist and pediatric orthopedist with access to X-rays, ultrasound, and CT imaging and 24/7 access to emergency MRI within the hospital.
  • Nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants with training and credentials in pediatric emergency care, including pediatric advanced life support and trauma care.
  • Pediatric specialists and subspecialists including surgery, gastroenterology (digestive care), cardiology (heart care), neurology, neonatology (newborn care), pulmonology (lung care), and ophthalmology (eye care).
  • Multilingual staff with emergency care experience to ensure you and your child understand what is needed and how our team will provide care.

Care for All Urgent Medical Needs

Our pediatric emergency medicine experts care for the full range of illnesses and injuries in young patients, including:

  • Fractures
  • Fever
  • Breathing problems such as bronchiolitis and asthma
  • Appendicitis
  • Digestive problems such as intussusception (bowel obstruction)

A Center Designed for Your Child

Our Pediatric Emergency Department was designed for children, teens, and young adults and is located in a designated section, separate from the adult emergency area. With wall murals and design elements incorporated into each treatment area, your child receives care in a pleasant, soothing environment.

Family-Centered Care

Medical emergencies affect not only your child, but also your entire family. We promote a "family-centered model" in which all aspects of our care promote your participation in decision-making. We will keep you and your child informed, guide you through your visit, and facilitate the follow-up care your child needs to get better.

Pediatric Hospitalist Program

Hospitalists are doctors who work exclusively within the hospital and provide continuity of care. There is always a pediatric hospitalist onsite at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens. The pediatric hospitalist is available for consultations in the Pediatric Emergency Department and can promptly connect children with the care they need, including admission to the Pediatric Inpatient Unit or Pediatric Intermediate Care Unit, if needed.

An Intermediate Care Unit Just for Children

Children who need more intensive care are treated in our state-of-the-art Pediatric Intermediate Care Unit (PIMU). The five-bed unit serves acutely ill children and others with illnesses requiring more frequent monitoring. Two of the beds are hard-wired for video electroencephalography (VEEG) to observe and track seizures in children with epilepsy and other seizure disorders
