Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a biological condition linked to inattention, impulsivity, and, in some cases, hyperactivity. It is one of the most common neurobehavioral disorders of childhood. The symptoms of ADHD are present to some extent in most children. However, when these symptoms are developmentally inappropriate, pervasive, and persistent, they can interfere with relationships, school, and work. NewYork-Presbyterian is a trusted provider of ADHD treatment for children and teens. Working with patients and their families, we create unique treatment plans to help patients gain focus and control.

Our Approach

Clinicians at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD. We perform a comprehensive evaluation, including a thorough history and a clinical assessment of the individuals academic, social and emotional functioning, and developmental level. Our multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists and psychologists design customized treatment plans, which may include:

  • consistent and predictable daily scheduling for the child
  • counseling and therapy to improve emotion regulation
  • Parent Management Training (PMT) to address behavioral concerns
  • Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) for very young children with behavioral concerns
  • medications, including stimulants
  • special education accommodations (504 plans and Individualized Education Plans or IEPs)
  • support groups
  • training in social skills

We monitor and provide ongoing support to children and families with ADHD and any associated learning disabilities.
