Addiction treatment in a safe, compassionate space

Recovery from alcohol or substance use disorders is a deeply personal journey. At NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester Behavioral Health, we provide individualized inpatient addiction treatment in our dedicated 14-bed rehabilitation unit located in White Plains, New York. Our program is licensed by the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS) and accredited by The Joint Commission.

We offer evidence-based therapies for individuals with alcohol and/or substance use disorders, including those with co-occurring psychiatric conditions. Our experts work closely with patients and their support networks to build the skills necessary to manage addiction and maintain long-term recovery — all within a safe, compassionate, and judgment-free environment. While each treatment plan is tailored to meet the evolving needs of the individual, the average length of stay is approximately two weeks.

Please note: For the safety and well-being of our patients, detoxification must be completed prior to admission. Our facility is not licensed to provide withdrawal management services. Attempting to detox without medical supervision can be dangerous, depending on the substance involved. We strongly recommend completing detox at a licensed facility before entering our rehabilitation program.

Our team

The inpatient addiction recovery program is led by a multidisciplinary team of experts who collaborate to create personalized care plans for each patient. Our team includes:

  • Psychiatrists and psychologists
  • Physician assistants and nurses
  • Social workers
  • Certified alcohol and substance abuse counselors (CASACs)
  • Psychosocial rehabilitation specialists
  • Registered dietitians
  • Spiritual care providers
  • Internists and nurse practitioners
  • Pharmacists

Together, these professionals bring a wide range of clinical expertise to support patients through every stage of recovery, addressing both the physical and emotional aspects of addiction. In addition to inpatient care, our team is actively engaged in community outreach. We provide substance use and recovery education—including harm reduction strategies such as Narcan (naloxone) training and the use of drug testing strips—to organizations, community groups, and colleges across Westchester County.

Our addiction recovery services

Through a wide range of services, we educate patients about substance use disorders and help them develop tools for abstinence, harm reduction, relapse prevention, stress management, social connection, and coping with stigma. Patients can receive therapy that’s tailored to their specific needs, such as motivational interviewing, cognitive and dialectical behavior therapies, coping skills, acceptance and commitment therapy, anger management, trauma psychoeducation, and gender-specific approaches.

Our services include:

  • Individual and group counseling
  • Access to psychiatric and medical care
  • Spanish-speaking staff and interpreter services for a variety of languages
  • Speakers from 12-step recovery programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and Cocaine Anonymous
  • Support for families and care partners
  • Aromatherapy
  • Narcan (naloxone) training and a Narcan kit at discharge
  • Smoking cessation
  • Nutritional counseling
  • Assistance with aftercare planning and connection to treatment in the community

We also offer technology-based treatment enhancements, such as:

  • Access to individual iPads to promote social connectedness with family, friends, and virtual support groups
  • Virtual reality-augmented mindfulness training
  • Clinician-guided craving exposure exercises
  • A dedicated comfort room for practicing sensory-based coping skills
  • Multiple pathways toward recovery approaches

Treatment of coexisting conditions

We understand that patients can have more than one psychiatric condition. Specialized care is available for people with a substance use disorder(s) that is complicated by other mental health challenges or medical illnesses once the acuity of medical or psychiatric conditions has stabilized. Patients can receive continuity of care on one unit, with connection as needed to all the world-class services available at NewYork-Presbyterian.

Admissions

The program is designed for adults aged 18 and older who are motivated to work toward recovery goals, are medically stable, and do not require medical detox/withdrawal management. Additional criteria for admissions are reviewed upon initiation of the admissions process by calling the Psychiatry Access Center at 888-694-5700.
