Dr. Auma Obama, President Obama's sister, will be speaking and then signing copies of her new memoir, And Then Life Happens (St. Martin's Press, April 2012), on Monday, April 30, from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at the New York-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital (3959 Broadway at West 166th Street).

The book is described as a candid and emotional memoir in which Dr. Obama shares her own compelling story, which includes details of her close relationship with her younger brother Barack, whom she met for the first time in the 1980s. Dr. Obama grew up in Kenya and lived for many years in Europe. She now lives in Nairobi where, after working for almost five years for CARE International, she has started her own non-profit foundation — Sauti Kuu (Kiswahili for "Powerful Voices") — that works to support children and youth. Profits from the sale of her book will fund this foundation.

The Afya Foundation, a Yonkers-based organization that recycles unwanted medical and humanitarian supplies to Haiti and African nations, is sponsoring the event. Afya is also working closely with Dr. Obama to send a container of supplies to Kenya to support the establishment of a youth center and health care dispensary at Sauti Kuu. Cribs donated by New-York Presbyterian (host of the book signing) will help realize Dr. Obama's vision of a day care center for rural teenage mothers participating in Sauti Kuu's Sustainable Economic Development Program, learning different vocational skills to achieve economic self-reliance through work.
