Events and Support Groups Sponsored by New York Methodist Hospital

New York Methodist Hospital offers a free Breastfeeding Support Group for new mothers. This group meets weekly on Tuesdays from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Breastfeeding Support Group focuses on providing encouragement and information for mothers and their newborns, from birth to three months old. A certified lactation consultant leads the group. The meetings take place in the Hospital's Wesley House, Rooms 3K-C, 501 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. In collaboration with Congregation Beth Elohim and Heights and Hills Senior Services, NYM will offer a Caregiver Lecture Series. Home to Hospital, Hospital to Home will take place on Wednesday, October 2, 2013. The Benefits and Entitlements for Older Adults will take place on Wednesday, October 23, 2013. The New York Methodist Hospital Cancer Support Group will meet on Thursday, October 3, 2013 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Both a physician and a chaplain lead the group. Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a disease indicated by high blood pressure in the arteries that supply blood to the lungs. PH affects people of all ages, races and ethnic backgrounds. New York Methodist Hospital hosts a free Pulmonary Hypertension Support Group. This group connects people with PH and educates them on treatments and new developments for the disease. The next meeting will be held on Monday, October 7, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Hospital's Wesley House, Room 7A, 501 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. New York Methodist Hospital's Center for Parkinson's Disease and Other Movement Disorders offers a number of support groups for patients with neurological disorders and their caregivers. The Parkinson's Support Group will meet on Thursday, October 10, 2013. The Caregivers Support Group will meet on Thursday, October 17, 2013. The Deep Brain Stimulation Support Group will meet on Thursday, October 24, 2013. All Parkinson's support group meetings take place at 2:00 p.m. at the Hospital. According to the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, an estimated six million people (or one in every 50) in the United States have an unruptured brain aneurysm. New York Methodist Hospital offers highly advanced technology and expert physicians to provide services for the treatment of aneurysms and reversal of strokes. NYM also offers a free support group for patients who have suffered from brain aneurysms or subarachnoid hemorrhages (SAH). The Brain Aneurysm Awareness Group will meet on Saturday, October 12, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The meeting will take place in the Hospital's Executive Dining Room, located at 506 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. New York Methodist Hospital offers a monthly senior seminar series at Brooklyn College. The series features various clinicians from the Hospital who lecture on senior health topics. This month join NYM ophthalmologist, Mark Harooni, M.D., as he presents For Your Eyes Only on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Brooklyn College Student Center located at East 27th Street and Campus Road. Hepatitis C (HVC) is an infection caused by a virus that attacks the liver and leads to inflammation. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that over four million Americans are infected with HVC. New York Methodist Hospital hosts a Hepatitis C Support Group for people living with HVC and their loved ones. The group is directed by a physician specializing in liver disorders. The next meeting will take place on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Hospital's Executive Dining Room, located at 506 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. Obesity is an epidemic that impacts over nine million Americans. More and more people who are affected by obesity are seeking information about surgical weight reduction. New York Methodist Hospital offers a free Surgical Weight Reduction Information Seminar and Support Group. This month the group will meet on Saturday, October 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and on Thursday, October 24, 2013 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. During the first 30 minutes of the seminar, a surgeon will conduct an information session for individuals who are interested in learning about the surgery. A 90-minute support group meeting, open to pre- and post-operative patients will follow the information session. New York Methodist Hospital is partnering with Spirit of Women to host its first ever Evening of Spirit signature event on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 from 6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. The event will feature pampering services, shopping, women's health information, door prizes, goody bags, healthy cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and desserts. Admission to the event is $10 for Spirit members and $15 for non-members (registration for Spirit of Women is free and can be completed online at nym.org/spirit). The event will take place at the Hospital's Carrington Pavilion, located at 506 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. Over 24 million Americans suffer from diabetes, the disease which occurs when the body fails to produce enough insulin or when the produced insulin does not work as effectively as it should. New York Methodist Hospital offers a free Diabetes Support Group. The group is run by a certified diabetes educator and is open to individuals living with diabetes, and those who have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes. The Diabetes Support Group will meet on Thursday, October 24, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Hospital's Wesley House 6A, 501 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn.
