NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester has opened a new progressive care unit (PCU), expanding access to advanced care from Columbia physicians and enabling more patients in Westchester to receive specialized treatment closer to home.

The 10-bed unit, which began a phased opening this spring, serves patients who are stable but require close monitoring and a more intensive level of nursing care than is available on a traditional hospital floor. A bridge between the intensive care unit (ICU) and medical-surgical units, the PCU supports patients recovering from serious illness, surgery and other complex medical conditions, including those transitioning out of the ICU who still require specialized care before returning home or moving to a standard inpatient unit.

“We are pleased to open our new progressive care unit and expand access to complex care for patients in Westchester,” said Paul Dunphey, senior vice president, northern market, at NewYork-Presbyterian. “By offering this level of care, we can treat more patients closer to home while providing the specialized monitoring and advanced treatment they need.”

The new unit will feature 10 private patient rooms, including two negative-pressure rooms designed to safely care for patients with airborne infectious diseases. Patients cared for in the PCU may include those recovering from serious illness, surgery, congestive heart failure, respiratory conditions or other complex medical needs.

“The progressive care unit creates an environment that supports both healing and clinical excellence,” said Dr. Xenia Frisby, associate chief medical officer and chief quality officer at NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester and assistant professor of medicine at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. “Patients who no longer require intensive care can recover in a setting that is less acute while still benefiting from close monitoring and highly specialized nursing care.”

The opening of the PCU is part of NewYork-Presbyterian’s broader strategy to expand access to advanced care in Westchester. This unit allows the hospital to enhance critical care services and support more complex surgical procedures and specialized cardiac care.

The unit is overseen by a multidisciplinary team that includes nursing leadership, hospitalists and a dedicated medical director focused on delivering coordinated, patient-centered care.
