Brooklyn, New York - On Saturday, May 13, NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital held its major annual fundraiser. The “License to Heal”-themed gala event was held at the Brooklyn Museum and featured dinner, dancing, presentations and an award ceremony in honor of Bashar H. Fahoum, MD, medical director of the trauma program at the Hospital.

Dr. Fahoum received the Lewis S. Pilcher Award in recognition of nearly three decades of service to NYP Brooklyn Methodist. This award is the Hospital’s highest honor to a physician and is presented to a distinguished leader who has made significant contributions to NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital.

After graduating from the School of Medicine at Damascus University in 1988, Dr. Fahoum began his surgical residency at the Hospital. “Surgery was all I ever wanted to do,” said Dr. Fahoum. “I come from a family of surgeons and physicians and never thought twice about it—I was always going to be a surgeon.” He was hired by the Hospital as an attending general surgeon and the director of surgical intensive care in 1993. Dr. Fahoum was instrumental in the development of the Hospital’s Trauma Program, and worked with colleagues in the Departments of Surgery and Emergency Medicine to achieve the Hospital’s Trauma Center designation in 2015.

"The gala was a huge success," said Amanda Donikowski, director of development. "It was wonderful to celebrate with colleagues and friends of the Hospital. Thanks to the attendees' generosity, we were able to generate $700,000 to benefit the Hospital."
