New York Methodist Hospital's total joint replacement surgery program has been designated a UnitedHealth Premium Total Joint Replacement Specialty Center. The designation is based on detailed information about the Hospital's joint replacement program, including specialized training, practice capabilities and outcomes.

The Hospital presented UnitedHealthcare with data pertaining to both the volume of total joint replacement cases and the quality of the service provided. Some of the specific measures examined were the range of total joint care, on-site availability of physical therapy, the availability of emergency services, such as a rapid response team and intensive care, and the success rate of antibiotic treatments administered to patients.

"The UnitedHealth Premium designation signals to all consumers that New York Methodist Hospital meets or exceeds nationally recognized standards of care, said Sam Ho, M.D., executive vice president and chief medical officer at UnitedHealthcare.

In regard to the designation, Henry Tischler, M.D., chief of orthopedic surgery at New York Methodist, said, "This recognition affirms the level of excellence that New York Methodist Hospital continually achieves while providing total joint replacement care to the community. Every staff member who works with total joint replacement patients should be proud of the work they do."

Lauren Yedvab, senior vice president of NYM, added, "We are very pleased that UnitedHealthcare recognizes our outstanding program and exceptional patient outcomes in joint replacement."
