NYM recently opened the doors of its third cardiac catheterization lab, increasing the number of patients who can receive state-of-the-art heart disorder diagnostics and treatment at the Hospital. "The addition of the third cardiac catheterization laboratory speaks to the commitment of the Hospital towards providing the highest quality of cardiac care for the community," said Terrence Sacchi, M.D., chief of cardiology at NYM. "With all that has been done for cardiology at NYM, we have been able to create one of the best infrastructures in New York State," he said.

A cardiac catheterization laboratory is used to diagnose and treat blockages of the arteries through the insertion of a small, flexible tube into the heart. Cardiac catheterization can be used for diagnostic purposes, specifically to measure pressures within different chambers of the heart or to take blood samples for analysis.

Cardiac catheterization techniques, which generally take two or three hours to complete, also play an important role in therapeutic treatments such as repairing certain heart defects, opening a narrowed heart valve or opening blocked arteries in the heart using non-surgical methods like stent placement and angioplasty. Advances in technology have made it possible for these techniques to be used in place of surgery in many cases.

Funding for NYMís newest cardiac catheterization laboratory was made possible through a grant awarded to the Hospital by the New York City Council. City Council Member Bill deBlasio, who represents the Hospital neighborhood, was instrumental in supporting the Hospitalís request for funding. "We are extremely grateful to Bill deBlasio and his colleagues on the City Council for their help and faith in New York Methodist," said Mark J. Mundy, president and CEO of NYM. "Their support is making it possible for us to continue providing superb cardiac care to thousands of Brooklynites."
