Free Events and Support Groups Sponsored by New York Methodist Hospital

New York Methodist Hospital offers a free Breastfeeding Support Group for new mothers. This group meets weekly on Tuesdays from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Breastfeeding Support Group focuses on providing encouragement and information for mothers and their newborns, from birth to three months old. A certified lactation consultant leads the group. The meetings take place in the Hospital's Wesley House, Rooms 3K-C, 501 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. The New York Methodist Hospital Cancer Support Group will meet on Thursday, November 3, 2011 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Both a physician and a chaplain lead the group. In recognition of Pulmonary Hypertension Awareness Month, health care professionals from NYM will be available to answer questions about pulmonary hypertension; or high blood pressure in the arteries which supply the lungs. Free educational information and giveaways will be offered. Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a disease indicated by high blood pressure in the arteries that supply blood to the lungs. PH affects people of all ages, races and ethnic backgrounds. New York Methodist Hospital has recently created the Pulmonary Hypertension Support Group. This free group connects people with PH and educates them on treatments and new developments for the disease. November is American Diabetes Month, and in recognition, New York Methodist Hospital will host a free health fair, World Diabetes Day. The fair will feature free blood pressure screenings, free glucose screenings, free glaucoma screenings and free foot evaluations; a diabetes educator, a pharmacist, and a nutritionist will also be available to answer questions. The Hospital will also offer free educational information and giveaways at the health fair. NYM will observe World Diabetes Day on Monday, November 14, 2011 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Hospital's Carrington Pavilion Atrium, 506 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. New York Methodist Hospital will also celebrate World COPD Day this November. The Hospital will host a health fair to spread awareness about chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Respiratory therapists will be available to answer questions and offer free spirometry screenings. Giveaways and educational materials will also be available. Join NYM's physicians as they lecture about various health topics affecting seniors as part of the Hospital's Senior Health Seminar Series. This month's lecture will feature Edmund Giegerich, M.D., chief of endocrinology at NYM. He will speak on, "Your Diabetes Today." Hepatitis C is an infection caused by a virus that attacks the liver and leads to inflammation. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that over 4 million Americans are infected with HCV (Hepatitis C Virus). New York Methodist Hospital will host a Hepatitis C Support Group for people living with Hep C and their loved ones. The group will be run by a physician specializing in liver disorders. Obesity is an epidemic that impacts over nine million Americans. More and more people who are affected by obesity are seeking information about surgical weight reduction. New York Methodist Hospital offers a free Surgical Weight Reduction Information Seminar and Support Group. This month the group will meet on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and on Thursday, November 17, 2011 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. During the first 30 minutes of the seminar, a surgeon will conduct an information session for individuals who are interested in learning about the surgery. A 90-minute support group meeting, open to pre- and post-operative patients will follow the information session.
