Dr. Laura Forese, one of the nation’s leading experts in hospital administration, has been named chairperson of the newly formed National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center Hospital Board. Dr. Forese is the executive vice president and chief operating officer at NewYork-Presbyterian, one of the nation’s top academic medical centers.

As chairperson, Dr. Forese will lead a panel comprised of external advisors that will counsel the Clinical Center on key issues including management, finances, and policies and organizational approaches that promote quality and patient safety. The Hospital Board will replace the current NIH Advisory Board for Clinical Research.

“The NIH Clinical Center is a vital institution that is responsible for countless breakthroughs in research, patient care and public health,” said Dr. Forese. “I am honored to help the Clinical Center in its mission of addressing the many healthcare and research needs our country faces.”

“Dr. Forese has an outstanding track record of innovation and excellence in research and clinical care in her time at NewYork-Presbyterian,” said Dr. Francis Collins, director of the NIH. “Her knowledge and expertise will be an invaluable resource to the Clinical Center.”

The creation of the Hospital Board is one of several recommendations from a working group of the Advisory Committee to the Director (ACD), on which Dr. Forese served. Comprised of national experts in hospital operations, the group sought to find ways to enhance the overall organization, financing and management of the Clinical Center and its affiliated labs and production facilities.

Dr. Forese is a key figure in academic medicine. At NewYork-Presbyterian, she is responsible for achieving operating targets, and implementing a patient-centered strategic vision and culture across the enterprise. She joined NewYork-Presbyterian in 2003 as vice president of medical affairs and, since then, has served as chief medical officer, group senior vice president and chief operating officer for NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell, NewYork-Presbyterian/Westchester and NewYork-Presbyterian/Lower Manhattan.

Prior to joining NewYork-Presbyterian, Dr. Forese spent four years as vice chair in Columbia’s Department of Orthopedic Surgery. A pediatric orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Forese has been a Columbia faculty member since 1993 and retains her appointment as associate clinical professor of orthopedic surgery. Dr. Forese graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Princeton University, and Alpha Omega Alpha from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons. Dr. Forese also holds a Master of Public Health from Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health.
