Events and Support Groups Sponsored by New York Methodist Hospital

New York Methodist Hospital offers a free Breastfeeding Support Group for new mothers. This group meets weekly on Tuesdays from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Breastfeeding Support Group focuses on providing encouragement and information for mothers and their newborns, from birth to three months old. A certified lactation consultant leads the group. The meetings take place in the Hospital's Wesley House, Rooms 3K-C, 501 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a disease indicated by high blood pressure in the arteries that supply blood to the lungs. PH affects people of all ages, races and ethnic backgrounds. New York Methodist Hospital hosts a free Pulmonary Hypertension Support Group. This group connects people with PH and educates them on treatments and new developments for the disease. The next meeting will be held on Monday, June 3, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Hospital's Wesley House, Room 7A, 501 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. The New York Methodist Hospital Cancer Support Group will meet on Thursday, June 6, 2013 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Both a physician and a chaplain lead the group. Sickle cell disease is an inherited disease of the blood that interferes with the body's ability to manufacture normal hemoglobin (part of the red blood cell that carries oxygen). New York Methodist Hospital's Comprehensive Sickle Cell and Thalassemia Program offers a Sickle Cell Disease Support Group for parents of children with the disease. The support group will meet on Thursday, June 6, 2013 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; a licensed clinical social worker runs the group. This time of year can be especially hard when you are missing a loved one. New York Methodist Hospital offers a free Bereavement Support Group. This month the Bereavement Support Group will meet on Thursday, June 6, 2013 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. NYM will also offer a Perinatal Bereavement Support Group which will meet later that evening from 8:00 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. on June 6. A licensed clinical social worker facilitates the group. The meetings will take place in the Buckley 8 Conference Room, 506 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. According to the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, an estimated six million people (or one in every 50) in the United States have an unruptured brain aneurysm. New York Methodist Hospital offers highly advanced technology and expert physicians to provide services for the treatment of aneurysms and reversal of strokes. NYM also offers a free support group for patients who have suffered from brain aneurysms or subarachnoid hemorrhages (SAH). The Brain Aneurysm Awareness Group will meet on Saturday, June 8, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The meeting will take place in the Hospital's Executive Dining Room, located at 506 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. As a participant in Park Slope's annual Seventh Heaven Street Fair, New York Methodist Hospital will sponsor free blood pressure, glucose, podiatry and dental screenings with valuable health information and giveaways. The event will take place on Sunday, June 16, 2013 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in front of New York Methodist Hospital on Seventh Avenue between Sixth Street and Seventh Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. New York Methodist Hospital is partnering with BP3D (Brooklyn Partnership to Drive Down Diabetes) to offer two free six-week diabetes self-management workshops to help give individuals living with diabetes the skills and knowledge to manage the disease. Topics will include monitoring blood glucose levels, dealing with common symptoms, and new and innovative ways to cope. The workshops will be offered in both English and Spanish. The classes (English)will meet weekly on Tuesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. starting June 18, 2013 in NYM's Cardiology Conference Room, Buckley- 2nd floor, 506 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. Classes offered in Spanish will meet from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesdays also starting June 18 in NYM's Wesley House, Room 6A, 501 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. New York Methodist Hospital's Center for Parkinson's Disease and Other Movement Disorders offers a number of support groups for patients with neurological disorders and their caregivers. The Parkinson's Support Group meetings are held on the second Thursday of every month; this month the group will meet on Thursday, June 13, 2013. The Caregivers Support Group meets on the third Thursday of the month; this month the group will meet on Thursday, June 20, 2013. The Deep Brain Stimulation Support Group meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of every month; this month the group will meet on Thursday, June 27, 2013. Hepatitis C (HVC) is an infection caused by a virus that attacks the liver and leads to inflammation. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that over four million Americans are infected with HVC. New York Methodist Hospital hosts a Hepatitis C Support Group for people living with HVC and their loved ones. The group is directed by a physician specializing in liver disorders. The next meeting will take place on Wednesday, June 19, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Hospital's Executive Dining Room, located at 506 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. Obesity is an epidemic that impacts over nine million Americans. More and more people who are affected by obesity are seeking information about surgical weight reduction. New York Methodist Hospital offers a free Surgical Weight Reduction Information Seminar and Support Group. This month the group will meet on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and on Thursday, June 27, 2013 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. During the first 30 minutes of the seminar, a surgeon will conduct an information session for individuals who are interested in learning about the surgery. A 90-minute support group meeting, open to pre- and post-operative patients will follow the information session. Over 24 million Americans suffer from diabetes, the disease which occurs when the body fails to produce enough insulin or when the produced insulin does not work as effectively as it should. This month, New York Methodist Hospital is offering a free Diabetes Support Group. The group is run by a certified diabetes educator and is open to individuals living with diabetes, and those who have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes. The Diabetes Support Group will meet on Thursday, June 27, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Hospital's Wesley House 6A, 501 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn.
