Free Events and Support Groups Sponsored by New York Methodist Hospital
New York Methodist Hospital offers a free Breastfeeding Support Group for new mothers. This group meets weekly on Tuesdays from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Breastfeeding Support Group focuses on providing encouragement and information for mothers and their newborns, from birth to three months old. A certified lactation consultant leads the group. The meetings take place in the Hospital's Wesley House, Rooms 3K-C, 501 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. The New York Methodist Hospital Cancer Support Group will meet on Thursday, January 5, 2012 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Both a physician and a chaplain lead the group. Resolve to quit smoking for good in the New Year! New York Methodist Hospital's Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine is co-sponsoring a seven-week "Freedom From Smoking" workshop with the American Lung Association of New York. The fee for the workshop is $75, which will cover the cost of the course materials. The seven-week "Freedom From Smoking" workshop series will begin on Thursday, January 5, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The classes will take place on the Hospital campus in Wesley House, Room 7B, 501 Sixth Street, Park Slope Brooklyn. Join NYM's physicians as they lecture about various health topics affecting seniors as part of our Senior Health Seminar Series. This month's presentation will feature David Frankel, M.D., dermatologist at New York Methodist Hospital. The lecture title is "I've Got You Under My Skin." Hepatitis C (HVC) is an infection caused by a virus that attacks the liver and leads to inflammation. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that over four million Americans are infected with HCV.. New York Methodist Hospital hosts a Hepatitis C Support Group for people living with HVC and their loved ones. The group will be directed by a physician specializing in liver disorders. The next meeting will take place on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Hospital's Executive Dining Room, located at 506 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. Obesity is an epidemic that impacts over nine million Americans. More and more people who are affected by obesity are seeking information about surgical weight reduction. New York Methodist Hospital offers a free Surgical Weight Reduction Information Seminar and Support Group. This month the group will meet on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and on Thursday, January 26, 2012 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. During the first 30 minutes of the seminar, a surgeon will conduct an information session for individuals who are interested in learning about the surgery. A 90-minute support group meeting, open to pre- and post-operative patients will follow the information session.
