Dr. Paresh C. Shah Named Group Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Division

NewYork-Presbyterian has named Dr. Paresh C. Shah group senior vice president and chief operating officer of NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Division, effective January 3.

He joins from NYU Langone Health, where he served in a number of leadership capacities, most recently as surgeon-in-chief and chair of the Health System Perioperative Services Management Committee, and chief of the Division of General Surgery. He was appointed professor of surgery at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine in 2013. Prior to NYU, Dr. Shah was vice chair of surgery and chief of minimally invasive surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital, Northwell Health, also serving as the program director of the general surgery residency.

In his new role, Dr. Shah manages and directs daily operations, including the cost, quality, and delivery of services for NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital.

Dr. Shah has a demonstrated track record of achievement and innovation in clinical surgery, with a focus on the application of minimally invasive surgical approaches to GI cancers. Dr. Shah has extensive leadership experience in academic health care including quality, value, strategic planning, and hospital operations. He has served on the Presidential Task Force on Healthcare IT and in leadership roles at many professional societies including the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), where he has served on the Board of Governors. Dr. Shah is the recipient of many awards, including Faculty Teaching, Excellence in Medical Leadership and the Distinguished Service award from SAGES.

He earned his medical degree from SUNY Health Science Center (Downstate), and completed his general surgery training at Kings County Hospital and the Lahey Clinic, with a fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He has also completed management programs at Northwell Health, NYU Langone, and at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
