Dr. Michael Stewart has been named the editor-in-chief of The Laryngoscope, a prestigious academic journal that has been the forum for many groundbreaking advances in the specialty of otolaryngology–head and neck surgery.

Dr. Stewart is professor and chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery, and the E. Darracott Vaughan Jr., M.D. Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at Weill Cornell Medical College, and otolaryngologist-in-chief at NewYork–Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

"Since I was a medical student, I have always been amazed at how many classic and influential articles — as well as current, cutting-edge otolaryngology research topics — have been published in The Laryngoscope," Dr. Stewart says. "I am honored to be appointed editor of such an influential journal."

Dr. Stewart, whose term will commence on Oct. 1, will be the ninth editor of the journal, which was founded in 1896; he succeeds Dr. Jonas T. Johnson.

Dr. Stewart's clinical practice is general otolaryngology, and he has particular interest in nose and sinus disease, sleep breathing disorders, and head and neck trauma. His research interests include outcomes and quality-of-life research, and he has received research funding from The National Institutes of Health and Agency of Healthcare Research and Quality, among others.

He is the author of two textbooks, more than 25 book chapters, and more than 100 peer-reviewed publications. He previously served as associate editor and on editorial boards of several other journals, including the Archives of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, the American Journal of Rhinology and Allergy, and the International Forum of Allergy and Rhinology. He is vice president of the Eastern Section of the Triological Society, a director of the American Board of Otolaryngology, and chairman of the Education Council of the Board. He is president of the Association of Academic Departments of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, and he has also served as president of the Society of University Otolaryngologists.

Published by Wiley-Blackwell, The Laryngoscope provides a forum for the international exchange of knowledge including basic and evidence-based clinical and research findings in the full spectrum of disorders of the head and neck and related structures. The American Laryngological, Rhinological and Otological Society, aka The Triological Society, owns the journal.
