Dr. Angela Kadenhe-Chiweshe, an accomplished pediatric surgeon and leader in complex pediatric surgery, has been appointed chief of the Division of Pediatric Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Children’s Hospital of Children’s Hospital of New York and Weill Cornell Medicine, effective July 1.

Dr. Kadenhe-Chiweshe will lead pediatric surgical services at NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Children’s Hospital of Children’s Hospital of New York and Children’s Hospital of New York locations in Brooklyn, Lower Manhattan and Queens, overseeing clinical programs spanning pediatric general, thoracic, and trauma surgery, as well as complex multidisciplinary program in hepatobiliary, oncology, neonatal surgery, and highly specialized services such as the use of a heart-lung machine, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), for those children and families facing severe health complications. In her new role, she will expand foundational pediatric surgical programs, further develop advanced subspecialty and complex surgical services, and enhance collaboration across specialties.

Dr. Kadenhe-Chiweshe succeeds Dr. Nitsana Spigland, who will step down after decades of distinguished leadership, and continue as a member of Weill Cornell Medicine’s faculty.

“I am honored to lead a very talented and dedicated division of pediatric surgeons at NewYork-Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medicine and build upon an already strong foundation as we expand programs to deliver the highest quality care for young patients and their families,” said Dr. Kadenhe-Chiweshe, who is also an associate professor of clinical surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine.

Dr. Kadenhe-Chiweshe is focused on a multidisciplinary, patient-centered approach to care and delivering highly personalized treatment for children with complex conditions. She has expertise in hepatobiliary care (treatment of the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts) and surgery, including the management of biliary atresia, a rare disease in infants where the bile ducts become blocked or do not develop properly, and other rare disorders, as well as pediatric surgical oncology and congenital conditions.

Dr. Kadenhe-Chiweshe earned her medical degree from Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, completed her general surgery training and her pediatric surgery fellowship at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center. She is actively involved in clinical research and multidisciplinary program development aimed at improving care for children with rare and complex diseases. Dr. Kadenhe-Chiweshe joined NewYork-Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medicine in 2019 and throughout her career has been committed to advancing pediatric surgical care, mentoring trainees and improving outcomes for children with complex surgical needs.
