Cardiovascular Research Foundation Honors Dr. Allan Schwartz at the Annual Pulse Gala

The Cardiovascular Research Foundation (CRF) honored Dr. Allan Schwartz at its annual Pulse of the City Gala on December 9 for his vital role in advancing the understanding and treatment of cardiovascular disease through his dedication to patient care and research.
Dr. Allan Schwartz, Harold Ames Hatch Professor of Medicine; Seymour Milstein Professor of Cardiology (in Medicine); chief, Division of Cardiology; physician-in-chief, Vivian Seymour Milstein Family Heart Center; vice chair, Department of Medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, was also recognized for his influential work in identifying and preventing cardiac risks in professional athletes over the years.
During his career at NYP, Dr. Schwartz has been vigorously involved in patient care, education, as well as clinical research with a current focus on valvular heart disease. He has progressively assumed various leadership and administrative roles, serving as director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, associate director of the Division of Cardiology and the Seymour Milstein and Harold Ames Hatch Professor of Clinical Medicine. In 1999, Dr. Schwartz became chief of the Division of Cardiology at NewYork-Presbyterian/CUMC. Dr. Schwartz has also played an important administrative role within the Department of Medicine, serving as vice chairman of the Department of Medicine.
He has been a driving force behind the development of the NewYork- Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center Cardiovascular Service Line and the development of the Vivian and Seymour Milstein Family Heart Center. Under Dr. Schwartz’s leadership, there has been a major increase in the breadth of cardiology clinical and research activities, resulting in the Division of Cardiology’s international prominence and emerging as one of the leading cardiology training centers in the United States.
In February 2016, Dr. Schwartz and co-authors at NYP/Columbia, in collaboration with the NBA, published pivotal research that that examined cardiac remodeling in NBA basketball players. The area of research, for which CRF chose to honor Dr. Schwartz, presents a significant addition in the understanding risk factors for sudden cardiac death in this population.
The CRF is dedicated to helping doctors improve the survival and quality of life for people suffering from heart and vascular disease. For over 25 years, CRF has helped pioneer innovations in interventional cardiology and has educated doctors on the latest treatments for heart disease.
Held in New York City at the Plaza Hotel, the Pulse Gala is CRF’s signature fundraising event. Proceeds benefit CRF’s medical research and educational programs.
