NewYork-Presbyterian Lawrence Hospital Awarded Bariatric Certification from the Joint Commission
Jan 10, 2018
NewYork-Presbyterian Lawrence Hospital announced that it has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Bariatric Surgery Certification. The Gold Seal of Approval® is a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to providing safe and effective patient care.
NewYork-Presbyterian Lawrence Hospital is the first hospital in Westchester – and one of only six nationwide – to receive this certification.
The hospital and its Bariatric Surgery program underwent a rigorous on-site review in August. Joint Commission experts evaluated compliance with national disease-specific care standards, and clinical practice guidelines and performance measures also were assessed.
Weight loss surgery is often used to treat morbid obesity and has been shown to reverse diabetes in some cases.
Established in 2002 and awarded for a two-year period, The Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific Care Certification evaluates clinical programs across the continuum of care and addresses three core areas:
- Compliance with consensus-based national standards;
- Effective use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care; and
- An organized approach to performance measurement and improvement activities.
“NewYork-Presbyterian Lawrence Hospital is pleased to receive Disease-Specific Care Certification from The Joint Commission, the premier health care quality improvement and accrediting body in the nation,” said Michael J. Fosina, MPH, FACHE, President of NewYork-Presbyterian Lawrence Hospital. “We are very proud of our Bariatric Surgery program, and this certification provides us with the framework to create a culture of excellence for patients in our community.”
“We pride ourselves in our comprehensive approach to weight management which offers a full range of weight loss surgeries and incorporates a multidisciplinary team that includes nurse practitioners and registered dietitians,” said Miguel R. Silva, MD, FACS, Director of the Center for Advanced Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Lawrence Hospital and Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. “This recognition from The Joint Commission recognizes the results of this collaboration and the team’s dedication to the best possible outcomes for our patients.”
