New York Methodist Hospital offers a free Breastfeeding Support Group for new mothers. This group, which is also open to mothers who did not deliver their babies at NYM, meets weekly on Tuesdays from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Breastfeeding Support Group focuses on providing encouragement and information for mothers and their newborns, from birth to three months old. A certified lactation consultant leads the group. The meetings take place in the Hospital's Wesley House, Rooms 3K-C, 501 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. Resolve to quit smoking for good this spring! New York Methodist Hospital's Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine is co-sponsoring a seven-week "Freedom From Smoking" workshop with the American Lung Association of New York. The fee for the workshop is $75, which will cover the cost of the course materials. The seven-week "Freedom From Smoking" workshop series will begin on Thursday, April 5, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The classes will take place on the Hospital campus in Wesley House, Room 7B, 501 Sixth Street, Park Slope Brooklyn. The New York Methodist Hospital Cancer Support Group will meet on Thursday, April 5, 2012 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Both a physician and a chaplain lead the group. Approximately 400,000 Americans are living with multiple sclerosis (MS), and each week 200 additional individuals are diagnosed. New York Methodist Hospital offers a free support group for individuals diagnosed with MS during the past two years. The Living with MS Support Group offers information and a place to begin to discuss concerns, experiences and resources. The group meets weekly on Tuesdays, beginning April 10 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The meetings take place in the Hospital's Buckley 8 Conference Room located at 506 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. According to the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, an estimated six million people (or one in every 50) in the United States have an unruptured brain aneurysm. New York Methodist Hospital recently acquired highly advanced technology and expert physicians to provide new services for the treatment of aneurysms and reversal of strokes. NYM offers a free support group for patients who have suffered from brain aneurysms or subarachnoid hemorrhages (SAH). The Brain Aneurysm Support Group will meet on Saturday, April 14, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The meeting will take place in the Hospital's Executive Dining Room, located at 506 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, nearly 40,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year. Other common names for the disease include mouth cancer, tongue cancer, tonsil cancer, and throat cancer. New York Methodist Hospital's Division of Dental Medicine will offer free oral cancer screenings on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The screenings will take place in the dental clinic located in the Hospital's Kirkwood Pavilion, 506 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. Hepatitis C (HVC) is an infection caused by a virus that attacks the liver and leads to inflammation. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that over four million Americans are infected with HCV. New York Methodist Hospital hosts a Hepatitis C Support Group for people living with HVC and their loved ones. The group is directed by a physician specializing in liver disorders. Join NYM's physicians as they lecture about various health topics affecting seniors as part of our Senior Health Seminar Series. This month's presentation will feature Gioia Turitto, M.D., cardiologist at New York Methodist Hospital. The lecture title is "The Beat Goes On: Women and Heart Disease." Obesity is an epidemic that impacts over nine million Americans. More and more people who are affected by obesity are seeking information about surgical weight reduction. New York Methodist Hospital offers a free Surgical Weight Reduction Information Seminar and Support Group. This month the group will meet on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and on Thursday, April 26, 2012 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. During the first 30 minutes of the seminar, a surgeon will conduct an information session for individuals who are interested in learning about the surgery. A 90-minute support group meeting, open to pre- and post-operative patients will follow the information session.
