NewYork-Presbyterian has been named the 2018 Career & Technical Education (CTE) Partner of the Year by the New York City Department of Education and the CTE Advisory Council. NewYork-Presbyterian was recognized for its commitment to the students of Inwood Early College for Health and Information Technologies.

Inwood Early College is a technical education school that prepares students for careers in health and information technologies and offers both high school diplomas and associate degrees through the City University of New York (CUNY) at no charge. Opened in 2014 and located in Inwood near the NewYork-Presbyterian Ambulatory Care Network’s Broadway Practice, the school represents a collaboration between NewYork-Presbyterian, the NYC Department of Education, CUNY, and Microsoft.

“It is an honor to be recognized for the work that NewYork-Presbyterian does with students in our community through Inwood Early College,” says Dr. Bruce Forman, a director of Information Services at NewYork-Presbyterian who also oversees the Hospital’s collaboration with Inwood Early College. “We are constantly impressed by the talent, skills, and professionalism of these promising students and have been privileged to work with them and with such an innovative and dedicated group of people from the NYC Department of Education, CUNY, and Microsoft.”

The concept behind Inwood Early College, and similar programs run by the Department of Education, is that students’ high school education can be significantly enhanced by not only making it easier to afford and attend a college, but also by exposing them to professionals and the workplace on a regular basis. At Inwood Early College, students take core academic classes and technical courses and can graduate in four years with a high school diploma or in six years with an associate’s degree. NewYork-Presbyterian provides work-based learning opportunities for the students via mentoring, job shadowing, and internships.
