A First-Class Experience Close to Home

Howard Hollander

Howard Hollander found help at The One

Having struggled with urological issues for years, Howard Hollander was able to find transformative support at NewYork-Presbyterian The One.

After his longtime urologist retired, 63-year-old commercial airline pilot Howard Hollander began searching for a new specialist close to home. As he researched physicians in the area, he came across Dr. David Hirschl at NewYork-Presbyterian The One in White Plains. Curious about the newly opened facility, Hollander drove over to see it for himself.

“I said, ‘Oh my God, this is brand new. This looks beautiful,’” he recalled. “It’s 10 minutes from my house.”

Although Interventional Radiology’s new angiography suite was not yet installed at The One, Hollander was so impressed by both the facility and his consultation with Hirschl that he decided he would wait to have his procedure performed there.

At his first appointment, Hollander immediately felt at ease.

“I was brought back within five minutes,” he said. “We just had a consultation. Not rushed, felt comfortable, answered all my questions.”

During that consultation, Hirschl explained prostate artery embolization (PAE), a minimally invasive procedure used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), commonly known as an enlarged prostate. Hollander appreciated Hirschl’s thorough explanations and clear communication about the available treatment options.

“It was both the demeanor of the doctor and his explanation of the procedure,” Hollander said. “I said, ‘Let’s do this.’”

Following the procedure, Hollander experienced minimal discomfort and returned to work within two weeks. Over the following weeks, he noticed a significant improvement in his symptoms.

Just as memorable as the clinical outcome was the care experience at The One.

“[The One] is, again, like a five-star hotel. It really is,” Hollander said.

From convenient parking and friendly staff to attentive nurses and physicians, Hollander said every interaction exceeded his expectations.

“It was an A-to-Z experience at The One,” he said. “From the moment you get there to the moment you leave.”

He also praised the staff who cared for him throughout his treatment and recovery.

“When I was in recovery, I had this nurse, Sophia, wait on me hand and foot,” he said. “Everything I needed.”

Today, Hollander is sleeping better and feeling more energized, and he is grateful for the care he received from Hirschl and the team at The One.

“I’m a happy guy right now,” he said.
