Although monthly breast self-exams aid in the identification of breast changes, a mammogram can show changes in the breast up to two years before these can be felt. A mammogram is an X-ray of the internal tissue of a breast, which aids in detecting and diagnosing breast disease. During a mammogram, the breast is pressed between two plates to flatten and spread the tissue. The pressure lasts only a few seconds while the image is taken, using very low levels of radiation.
The Avon Foundation Breast Imaging Center uses state-of-the-art digital mammography, which captures breast images and records them as computer images rather than on X-ray film. Images are then transmitted electronically to the diagnostic facility, where radiologists analyze the mammogram on a computer-aided detection (CAD) system that allows images to be electronically manipulated, permitting the physician to magnify subtle, but potentially significant changes. This advanced system can help detect cancer at its earliest stages, which results in better outcomes.

If the findings are positive, indicating an abnormality, you will be contacted immediately. You and your doctor or the Cancer Screening Program will also receive a letter in the mail reporting your screening outcome.
