Emergency Medicine Residency Program

Rotation Schedule

During rotations in the Department of Emergency Medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, EM-1 residents are assigned 18 clinical shifts and EM-3 residents are assigned 16 clinical shifts. All clinical shifts are twelve hours in length for EM-1 and EM-3 residents and are from 8 AM to 8 PM, 11 AM to 11 PM. or 8 PM to 8 AM in the Adult Emergency Care Area or the Pediatric Emergency Care Area. EM-2 residents are assigned a mix of nine hour and twelve hour clinical shifts, totaling 18 shifts per block.

Clinical Shifts

On clinical shifts, residents are responsible for direct patient care under the supervision of the academic faculty of the Department of Emergency Medicine. Teaching rounds begin at 8 a.m. each morning and include clinical work rounds, with residents required to be present and turn over patients under their direct care and discuss the teaching points of interesting cases, followed by a didactic presentation. The faculty and/or program director will facilitate and lead these discussions. Brief transition-of-care rounds begin at 8 p.m. each evening.

Residents have progressive, graduated responsibilities for patient management, including resuscitations, and junior resident education, as well as teaching rounds facilitation throughout the three-year program.
