Compassion in Action
How one clinic is building a healthier future for New York’s children.
In a City as Vast and Diverse as New York, Equitable Access to Exceptional Pediatric Care Is Not a Given—But It Should Be.

That’s the guiding mission of the NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell General Academic Pediatrics Practice, located on the fifth floor of the Helmsley Medical Tower, known as HT5. Here, children receive comprehensive care with an emphasis on inclusivity, access, and training the next generation of pediatricians.
Over 4,200 children—most from underserved communities and covered by public insurance—come to HT5 every year. That is more than 11,000 visits, for everything from routine checkups to complex care coordination.
As patients transition into adulthood, adolescent specialists serve as primary care and consult care providers. They collaborate with subspecialty providers from the neighboring NYP/Weill Cornell Medical Center Subspecialty Pediatrics Practice to ensure seamless communication.
NYP/Weill Cornell General Academic Pediatrics Practice is also leading the way in mental health integration. Recognizing that emotional well-being is inseparable from physical health, the practice embeds mental health professionals directly into the care team. Our Healthy Steps and Integrated Mental Health programs offer early screening, short-term treatment, and family support meeting children where they are.
Led by Dr. Sallie Permar (pictured, above), through partnerships with local schools and community centers, the team provides flu clinics, health education, and mentorship programs that inspire future healthcare professionals. Their work is not only healing children but also strengthening communities.
As an academic practice affiliated with Weill Cornell Medicine, we also train the next generation of pediatric leaders. Medical students and residents gain hands-on experience as primary providers in a setting that models excellence, empathy, and equity.
NYP/Weill Cornell General Academic Pediatrics Practice is not just a clinic—it’s also a community anchor, a research engine, and an educational institution. Through its unwavering commitment to accessible care, medical innovation, and future-focused training, this practice is building a healthier future for children in New York City.
