A New Era of Care for Children in Westchester

NYP’s newest projects continue to invest in the health of the county and beyond.

Hugh and Kate Carey Faced Every Parent’s Worst Fear When Their Young Son, Hughie, was suffering from croup and began struggling to breathe in the middle of the night. Without hesitation, they rushed him to the Emergency Department at NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester. Within moments of their arrival, the care team sprang into action, delivering expert treatment that quickly stabilized Hughie’s condition and brought much-needed relief to his family.

“NYP Westchester came through for us,” said Hugh. “The staff was unbelievable and got his breathing back on track. I can’t thank them enough for helping us in that situation.”

Now, philanthropy is coming through for the NYP Westchester emergency services. Visionary donors Linda and Glenn Greenberg have pledged a $10 million gift to renovate the existing adult Emergency Department and create a new dedicated pediatric space in the Emergency Department on the NYP Westchester campus.

Inspired by the care their family received, the Careys have joined a committee of donors to raise an additional $10 million for the project, to match the Greenbergs’ gift, by 2028.

The expanded ED will feature state-of-the-art technology, improved patient flow, and enhanced privacy and comfort. The new Pediatric Emergency Room will offer a welcoming, child-friendly environment staffed by ColumbiaDoctors—bringing the highest level of specialized care directly to families in Westchester.

“While medicine is in many ways increasingly global, it is important to invest in local care,” Hugh said. “When you’re facing an emergency, like I did with my son, there’s no time to drive an extra 20 minutes—you want to be two minutes away. Investing now means future generations will have access to the highest-quality specialty emergency care, right here in our community.”

Philanthropic support helps NYP save lives and ensure that every patient—especially our youngest—receives the care they deserve, right when they need it most.

At our NYP Westchester Behavioral Health Center campus, a new unit will increase pediatric inpatient capacity by 25 percent. For outpatient needs, the newly established Center for Childhood and Adolescent Behavioral Health will provide crisis assessment and evaluation, an intensive outpatient program, and the ability to connect with community partners for continuation of care.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation, psychiatric care for young people in Westchester will be more accessible than ever before.

These new programs and facilities will help us make significant strides toward easing the ongoing youth mental health crisis.

NewYork-Presbyterian and the Westchester community have had a storied history. Now, new investments are propelling this community toward a future defined by innovation and personalized care.
