Dr. Emile Bacha is a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon with a subspecialization in pediatric cardiac surgery. From 2000-2004, he was the Surgical Director of the Congenital Heart Center at the University of Chicago. From 2004-2009, he was Senior Associate in Cardiac Surgery at the Children's Hospital Boston and Associate Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, as well as Cardiac Surgery Fellowship Program Director, and Director of the Pediatric Heart Valve Center. Since January 2010, Dr. Bacha has been Director of the Congenital and Pediatric Cardiac Surgery program at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital, Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons, and Weill Cornell Medical School. In July 2011, he was appointed Chief of the Division of Cardiac, Thoracic, and Vascular Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center.
Dr. Bacha was born in Beirut, Lebanon, and received his medical degree at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, Germany. He completed his surgical residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and Emory University Hospitals, followed by a research fellowship at the Marie-Lannelongue Hospital of Paris-Sud University in France. He then completed a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and Children's Hospital Boston.
Dr. Bacha's research interests center around rendering pediatric cardiac surgery safer and less invasive. He has been supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, American Heart Association, and Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education. Dr. Bacha is one of the early developers of the "hybrid stage" procedure for treatment of a congenital heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome; this hybrid procedure is performed without cardiopulmonary bypass support, and is therefore less invasive than the traditional treatment (the Norwood procedure, which requires extensive open heart surgery). He has also published widely accepted technical competency metrics for pediatric heart surgeons.
Dr. Bacha is a member of several societies, including the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), the American Association of Thoracic Surgery (AATS), the Congenital Heart Surgeons' Society, the American College of Cardiologists, the American College of Surgeons, and the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation. He is also a member of the medical Advisory Board member of The Children's Heart Foundation, a board member of the Research Committee of the Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education (TSFRE), and the Chair of the Taskforce for Patient Safety of the STS.
Dr. Bacha has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, and has received many awards and honors, including the Simone et Cino del Duca Foundation Research award. He is currently the Surgical Editor for Pediatric Cardiology, and serves on the editorial boards of the World Journal for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery. He is an associate editor for the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.
