Often a patient's condition requires the services found at our Hospital. When that occurs, the process of transferring and transporting patients from another hospital to ours becomes vitally important.

To help referring physicians with the process, we are providing basic information for transferring and transporting patients to Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital.

Transferring Patients to the Neonatal ICU

Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital uses the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Emergency Medical Services to transport premature and critically ill newborns to our neonatal intensive care units from hospitals in the tri-state area and will arrange for transports from anywhere in the world. Our service is dedicated to providing rapid response with a highly skilled and experienced team of doctors, nurses and paramedics. A neonatologist will be available for consultations or to arrange for transport 24 hours a day/7 days a week.

When a transfer has been arranged, a copy of the newborn's medical records and other pertinent information should be sent with the infant.

The Hospital's goal is to keep an open line of communication with the referring physician and return all babies to their hospital of birth as soon as medically appropriate.

Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital serves as a referral center and regional resource for those hospitals that have patients that require the level of care provided at our hospital. Our pediatric intensive care unit provides state-of-the-art care around the clock to infants, children and adolescents with life-threatening illness and injuries and to those recovering from major and/or high-risk surgery.

Special transport teams - consisting of physicians, paramedics, nurses and other healthcare professionals - of the Hospital's Pediatric Critical Care Transport Program work closely with staff at the referring hospitals to provide the patients with the safest possible, state-of-the-art transfer to the pediatric intensive care unit at Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital.

Referring physicians who would like to transfer their patients to the pediatric intensive care unit just needs to call 212-305-6591, 24 hours a day/7 days a week and ask for the attending or critical care fellow. If after their discussion of the case, it is decided that the patient will be transferred to the pediatric intensive care unit, arrangements are automatically put in place for the transport of the young patient via the Hospital's Pediatric Critical Care Transport Program.

The referring physician will provide:

  • Name and phone number of referring hospital and
  • patient's and parent's name and address/telephone number
  • insurance information.
