Birth Center

A Natural Birth Experience

At NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, we understand and support the desire to have a natural birth experience. That is why we created the Birth Center at NewYork-Presbyterian/Lower Manhattan Hospital, where women with low-risk pregnancies can deliver in a compassionate, home-like environment while having access to the highest quality medical professionals in the event they are needed.

Birth Suites

Our birth suites feature a number of amenities, such as:

  • A spacious and comfortable full-sized bed
  • Plenty of space for your spouse, partner, family, and any other members of your support team including doulas. Large lounge chairs and a kitchenette help meet your needs.
  • A large tub used for hydrotherapy during labor
  • Labor support equipment, including slings, balls, wedges, and birth stools
  • Intermittent monitoring, giving you the freedom to move around as you wish
  • Nitrous oxide available to reduce discomfort and promote relaxation during labor

Your Birth Team

  • Experienced and compassionate midwives meet you during your prenatal visits at their practice. These midwives use a high-touch, low-tech approach to support you during your prenatal care, labor, and birth.
  • You are required to attend a preparation class taught by a Birth Center nurse to share with you what to expect during your Birth Center experience.
  • In the event of complications, obstetricians, neonatologists, anesthesiologists, and other highly qualified healthcare professionals are right outside your door on our labor and delivery unit.
  • Lactation consultants are available daily to provide breastfeeding support.
  • Typically you will be discharged within 24 hours.

At the Birth Center at NewYork-Presbyterian/Lower Manhattan Hospital, we look forward to giving you the tools and support you need to have the labor experience you desire.
