How We Treat Hand, Wrist & Elbow Disorders

When you come to NewYork-Presbyterian Queens with hand, wrist, or elbow pain, discomfort, or an injury, we'll start with a comprehensive examination and order any needed imaging tests to determine the best care for you. Your treatment may include one or more of the following approaches.

Nonsurgical therapy

We use nonsurgical treatments whenever possible, such as hand therapy and exercise, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (like ibuprofen), or steroid injections. Our certified hand therapists provide physical and occupational therapy specific to the hand, wrist, and elbow to increase your motion, dexterity, and strength. They may also create a custom brace or splint to meet your needs.

Surgery

If you need surgery, our orthopedic surgeons complete your operation using as minimally invasive an approach as possible, with the goal of fixing the problem and getting you back to your regular activities. They also perform more complex procedures such as elbow replacement. Our team incorporates components of orthopedic, plastic, neurological, and vascular surgery as needed to relieve your pain and help restore your mobility and function. When treating traumatic hand injuries, our surgeons are skilled in advanced grafting techniques to cover exposed bone and injured soft tissue.

Specialized Care for Fractures & Other Emergencies

When you have a fracture or other injury to the hand, wrist, or elbow, seeing a specialist as soon as possible increases your chance of proper healing. Our physicians use advanced techniques to restore the function of broken bones and help you recover. As one of the most common orthopedic injuries, fractures can often be treated with bracing or casting. If you need surgery, our orthopedic surgeons are experts in realigning broken bones to promote proper healing. Our fracture care team has expertise in the repair of broken bones in the hand, wrist, forearm, and upper arm.

The Emergency Department at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens is a designated Level I Trauma Center—the highest designation available by New York State for an emergency department. An orthopedic surgeon is available around the clock to provide consultation when needed in an emergency. Based on the severity of your injury at the time of your visit, our trauma team will determine the best treatment for you.
