Nonsurgical Treatments

Treatment Without Surgery

Before considering surgery, we'll aim to help you first with non-operative treatment. Many musculoskeletal injuries and disorders can be treated effectively without surgery. At NewYork-Presbyterian Queens, our physicians use a nonsurgical approach whenever possible to treat musculoskeletal injuries and sports medicine conditions, including those affecting the hip, knee, ankle, shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, neck, and back.

Our orthopedic surgeons, physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians, pain management experts, and physical and occupational therapists specialize in non-operative care through the use of advanced diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound, cortisone injections, manual therapy, biologic treatments, bracing, splinting, casting, and medications.

Physical Therapy

You may be referred for physical therapy through our Rehabilitation Department. Most people who need physical therapy can receive it on an outpatient basis. With specialized training in manual therapy and sports-specific techniques, physical therapists help you recover and gain strength and flexibility.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapists have specialized training in the care of injuries and disorders affecting the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder. They work with you to improve fine motor skills and accomplish the activities involved in daily living. Our highly skilled occupational therapists provide each patient with a comprehensive assessment and examination and develop a specialized rehabilitation program to maximize function.

Regenerative Therapies

Regenerative medicine aims to stimulate the body's own healing ability to treat a number of degenerative conditions and sports-related injuries. At NewYork-Presbyterian Queens, our physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians offer the latest treatments to relieve pain and speed the healing of orthopedic conditions.

Prolotherapy

This non-biologic treatment stimulates the healing of tendon and ligament injuries and mild degenerative conditions.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)

PRP uses concentrated platelets from your blood that can release growth factors into the area of injury, further stimulating healing of the injured tissue or joint.

Stem cell injections

Bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) involves harvesting bone marrow from the patient, which contains mesenchymal stem cells. We introduce this concentrated solution into a damaged joint or tissue to promote healing and some regeneration in the affected area.
