Gestational Trophoblastic Disease

Gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) is an uncommon malignancy often associated with a pregnancy event and the presence of placental tissue. There is a wide spectrum of conditions in this disease from the more benign behaving molar pregnancy to the highly virulent choriocarinoma. Any of the variants in this group can present with metastatic disease so these patients have to be monitored closely.

Our gynecologic oncologists at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens have extensive experience in diagnosing and treating GTD in all of its forms.

Gestational Trophoblastic Disease Experts

Our full-time board-certified gynecologic oncologists work with a team of specialists consisting of pathologists, radiologists, oncology nurses and other professionals with the experience to treat GTD.

All diagnostic and therapeutic modalities are available and the entire treatment plan can be completed closer to home.

Surgery for Gestational Trophoblastic disease

The most common surgical procedure for GTD is a suction curettage of uterine cavity to evacuate the abnormal tissue. Sometimes more extensive surgery is required depending on the location and extent of the disease. Since many of these patients are young and in their childbearing years, fertility preservation is one of the primary objectives.

Chemotherapy for Gestational Trophoblastic Disease

Patients with GTD usually require chemotherapy either before or after surgery. Many are at risk for recurrence and metastatic spread of disease. Our gynecologic oncologists offer the assessment necessary to identify high risk patients using all of the latest diagnostic modalities available.

Our experts devise a personalized treatment plan tailored to the individual patient and administered in the Therapeutic Medicine Center. The most effective drugs for GTD are available, along with the intensive surveillance that is required to prevent recurrence and metastasis. Therapies are administered with the goal of achieving the maximum response with the least amount of toxicity.
