How our team can help

If your child has an endocrine (hormonal) disorder, it can significantly affect his or her health and emotional well-being. At NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital in upper Manhattan and NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Children's Hospital on Manhattan's Upper East Side, we understand the impact of these disorders on the lives of the infants, children, teenagers, and young adults we care for, as well as their families. We've created special programs dedicated to the care of children and adolescents with diabetes, obesity, other hormonal disorders, and metabolic diseases. Patients can have a consultation, access diagnostic services, and receive the most advanced therapies.

What we treat

We have special expertise in the treatment of hormonal disorders in young patients, including:

  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Congenital adrenal hyperplasia
  • Metabolic bone disease
  • Disorders of growth and puberty
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Pituitary disorders
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Genetic syndromes with endocrine involvement
  • Management of the hormonal effects of treatments for other diseases, such as pediatric cancer and heart and digestive diseases

How we diagnose endocrine disorders

Endocrine stimulation testing. We offer this testing to diagnose certain hormonal disorders, such as growth hormone deficiency, diabetes or poor glucose tolerance, puberty problems, and adrenal disorders such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia. We perform these tests to trigger a certain hormonal response in your child. We will let you know if your child needs to fast before the procedure. You should plan to spend one to three hours for the test. Our staff will explain the specific details of the stimulation test that has been scheduled for your child.

Bone density testing. On-site bone density testing and body composition evaluation are available for children and adolescents, and we interpret the results based on childhood norms. NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley is one of the few centers in the Northeast with a dedicated pediatric bone density program, and experts there set the standards for pediatric bone density norms. Our staff members are certified as clinical densitometrists by the International Society for Clinical Densitometry.

Our Approach to Care

doctor teaching child patient about food

We take a team approach, bringing together endocrinologists, pediatric endocrine nurses, diabetes educators, nutritionists, social workers, child life specialists, and any other specialists needed to care for your child. Our teams provide the full range of diagnostic services as well as advanced treatments for hormonal and metabolic diseases that are based on the findings of the latest medical research. When your child approaches young adulthood, we provide transitional care as a bridge from pediatric to adult care. All the care your child needs is available through one medical center.

Treatments we offer

Our teams customize your child's care to his or her specific needs.

Hormonal therapy. Some children with growth disorders may receive growth hormone. Our specialists speak with compassion about hormonal therapy with families and children and at an age-appropriate and culturally sensitive level.

Diabetes treatment. Children with diabetes who need insulin injections receive instruction and guidance on how to use this medication, as well as education about diet and lifestyle to control their blood sugar and achieve the best health.

Weight management. We provide guidance about diet and exercise to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Both of our children's hospitals are among the few in the country offering bariatric (weight loss) surgery  for adolescents whose weight cannot be adequately controlled through other means.

Infusion therapies. For children and adolescents with osteogenesis imperfecta and other pediatric metabolic bone diseases, we have an infusion center where we can give intravenous bisphosphonate therapy.
