Och Spine Hospital

Comprehensive Surgical and Non-Surgical Spine Care at New York’s #1 Hospital

Our Approach to Spine Care

With state of the art equipment, our team of specialists provide a personalized approach to spine care to help us identify the symptoms and create the best care plan for each patient.

Advanced Spinal Imaging

Our facility is equipped with state-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), low-radiation EOS x-ray imaging machines, and three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) to assess your spine. In scoliosis patients, we also collect 3-D measurements using radiation-free computer software called DIERS to assess the spine while you walk.

Treatment without Surgery

Many disorders of the neck and back can be treated without an operation. During your evaluation, we determine if non-surgical treatment could be an effective option for you before resorting to surgery. Your doctor will determine if you may benefit from non-surgical spine treatments, such as:

  • Physical and occupational therapy from our nationally ranked rehabilitation program

  • The Schroth Method, a special type of physical therapy for people with mild to moderate scoliosis and other spinal deformities

  • Pain management with medication, acupuncture, and/or injections

  • Spinal cord stimulation and neuromodulation, a technique that uses electrical stimulation or delivers medications directly to a target area

  • Nerve root blocks

  • Bracing, an effective treatment for some people with scoliosis

  • Ergonomic adjustments

  • Stress and weight management to reduce stress on your spine

  • Exercise

  • Modified Movement

Specialized Spine Surgery

If non-operative spine treatments are not enough to successfully treat your disorder, you'll benefit from a team of neurosurgery and orthopedic spine surgeons at NYP Och Spine. Our renowned orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons use minimally invasive techniques wherever appropriate. We perform more inpatient spine surgical cases than any other hospital in New York City, according to the New York State Department of Health 2019 Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System (SPARCS) data, and perform the most complex spinal reconstructions — all with extraordinary precision.

  • Experience performing all types of spine surgery. Our team includes leaders in surgery for scoliosis and other spinal deformities in children and adults, cervical (neck) spine care, spinal tumors, and herniated disc treatment, and well as the repair of spine trauma and vertebral fractures.

  • Superior Outcomes. In 2017, New York-Presbyterian became the market leader in the New York region for inpatient spine surgery volume. Higher volume is correlated to lower rates of complications and improved outcomes.

  • The latest technology and techniques. Our surgeons tailor each operation to each patient, choosing minimally invasive or open surgery and using posterior (from the back) and anterior (from the front) approaches, as well as freehand and robotic surgery. We use computer-assisted tools to insert screws or other devices with enhanced precision.

  • Operating rooms built for spine surgery. Our surgical suites are built and designed specifically for spinal surgery, allowing surgeons and their team to perform complex procedures more efficiently and safely.

  • Monitoring for safety. We have a state-of-the art spinal cord and nerve monitoring team in all spine cases to provide critical and timely information about each patient's nervous system during complex surgery.

  • Integrated technology and communications. Outside of our treatment areas, we offer digital communications so patients, family members, and caregivers can view health information on their smartphones.

  • Multispecialty care. Our spine experts coordinate your care with our other top specialists as needed—such as cardiologists, endocrinologists, and pulmonologists—to optimize your outcome and expedite your recovery after surgery.
