Most Wired Hospitals Use Technology to Enhance the Patient Experience

The 20th annual “HealthCare’s Most Wired” survey, released by the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME), has recognized NewYork-Presbyterian as one of the nation’s “Most Wired” hospitals of 2018.

“NewYork-Presbyterian is a pioneer in how we use technology to improve access to high-quality, compassionate care,” said Daniel Barchi, group senior vice president and chief information officer of NewYork-Presbyterian. “We are pleased to be recognized as one of the Most Wired hospitals of 2018. It’s a testament to our innovation and the ways we leverage technology to enhance the exceptional care we provide our patients.”

In 2016, NewYork-Presbyterian launched its award-winning telemedicine service NYP OnDemand, a comprehensive suite of digital health services designed to improve access to the hospital’s world-class care. These services, in collaboration with Weill Cornell Medicine and Columbia, allow patients to easily communicate with physicians from a mobile phone, tablet, computer, and even self-service kiosks at select Duane Reade stores throughout New York City. The suite includes NYP OnDemand Express Care, which has helped to reduce emergency department visit times; digital urgent care, where patients can access emergency medicine physicians through a live video chat; virtual visits, for pre- and post-follow-up appointments with their doctor without travel to the office; and peer to peer consults between physicians.

NewYork-Presbyterian’s technologies also include its Clinical Operations Center (CLOC), a remote monitoring system and command center. At CLOC, clinicians track physiologic data of patients in the emergency department in real time and contact the patient’s assigned nurse when needed, adding a layer of safety, while analysts monitor the temperatures of refrigerators that store lifesaving medicine across multiple NewYork-Presbyterian hospitals.

The Most Wired recognitions were announced today at the CHIME Fall CIO Forum in San Diego.

The mission of the Most Wired program is to elevate the health and healthcare of communities around the world through the optimal use of information technology. The annual survey and benchmarking study is designed to identify and recognize healthcare organizations that exemplify best practices through their adoption, implementation and use of information technology. The survey was recently taken over by CHIME, the professional organization for healthcare IT leaders and a longtime sponsor of the program, and updated to better reflect current healthcare IT practices. Other key factors, such as cybersecurity, value-based care and patient engagement, were added or updated.

The Most Wired accompanying report found two key areas that emerged in 2018: the use of foundational technologies such as integration, interoperability, security and disaster recovery; and the use of transformational technologies to support population health management, value-based care, patient engagement and telehealth. These pieces need to be in place for an organization to leverage tools to effectively transform healthcare, according to CHIME.

“Healthcare IT has the potential to revolutionize care around the world, but to meet that potential it must be used strategically,” said Russell Branzell, president and CEO of CHIME. “The technology is important, but leadership and a strategic vision are equally important.”

CHIME’s “Most Wired” survey was conducted between March and May of 2018. The survey of 665 participants representing 2,190 organizations – including, for the first time, international participants, examines how organizations are embracing new technologies that support population management and value-based care.
