NewYork-Presbyterian’s Mobile Stroke Treatment Unit Wins 2018 Champions and Visionaries of Healthcare Award
New York

NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital’s Mobile Stroke Treatment Unit (MSTU) received a 2018 Champions and Visionaries of Healthcare Award at a recent event sponsored by the Brooklyn Daily Eagle and its long-standing parent company, EBrooklyn Media. The honorees were recognized for leading innovative health care practices that make a difference in patients’ lives in Brooklyn.

“Success can be measured in many ways,” says Dr. Michael Lerario, medical director of the Mobile Stroke Treatment Units. “Data is one of them, but the wellbeing and gratitude of those you have served is the greatest measure of all. We are honored to be recognized for our work.”

The Mobile Stroke Treatment Unit is an emergency vehicle equipped to provide immediate, specialized care to patients who may be experiencing a stroke. The unit uses telemedicine and advanced technology, allowing neurologists from NewYork-Presbyterian’s hospital locations to be consulted remotely and at a moment’s notice. It contains equipment, such as a CT scanner that can image the patient’s brain instantly, and medications specific to treating strokes, including a medication called tPA.

Launched in 2016, the MSTU is a collaboration with Weill Cornell Medicine, Columbia University Irving Medical Center and the Fire Department of New York. Thanks to a generous donation by the W.P. Carey Foundation, NewYork-Presbyterian expanded its fleet to Queens and Brooklyn in 2018, making it the first health system in the country to operate three of these advanced units.

The Champions and Visionaries of Healthcare Award highlights individuals and institutions that are investing in Brooklyn with top-ranked doctors, state-of-the-art technology and the latest advances in medicine, all in an effort to lower barriers to care and improve community health.
