Dr. Sheldon M. Feldman Named President of the American Society of Breast Surgeons

NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia Doctor Assumes Role at the Society’s Annual Meeting

Dr. Sheldon M. Feldman, one of the country’s top breast care surgeons, was named president of the American Society of Breast Surgeons (ASBrS) at its annual meeting in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Feldman is the chief of breast surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center and the Vivian L. Milstein Associate Professor of Surgery at Columbia University Medical Center.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by my esteemed colleagues as a leader in our field,” said Dr. Feldman. “I’d like to thank my entire team at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia, and I look forward to continuing to drive discovery and improve care for patients across the country.”

Dr. Feldman is a leader in the innovation and utilization of new surgical techniques and diagnostic tools, and is the principal investigator for both single-site and multi-centered research protocols that aim to advance the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. He has lectured and published extensively on minimally invasive breast surgery, tumor ablation, mammary ductoscopy, endoscopic/oncoplastic surgery, sentinel node biopsy, lymphedema prevention, environmental factors and breast cancer, compassion in medicine, physician-patient communication and holistic surgical practices.

He is a past chairperson of the publication committee for ASBrS and served on the ASBrS Board of Directors from 2010-2013. He became president-elect of the ASBrS at its annual conference last year. In addition, he is an active member of the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Breast Disease. He is a member of the editorial board for The Breast Journal, the Annals of Surgical Oncology and invited reviewer for the Cancer and American Journal of Surgery.

ASBrS is the primary leadership organization for general surgeons who treat patients with breast disease. It aims to improve the practice of breast surgery by serving as an advocate for surgeons who seek excellence in the care of breast patients, and provides a forum for the exchange of ideas by promoting education, research and the development of advanced surgical techniques. ASBrS now has more than 3,000 members throughout the United States and in 35 countries around the world.
