NewYork-Presbyterian today announced it has received an extraordinary $75 million gift from the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation to establish a new, state-of-the-art hospital for pre- and post-natal care. The Alexandra & Steven Cohen Hospital for Women and Newborns will be housed in the David H. Koch Center at the NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell campus and is expected to be open to patients by 2020.

“The Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation’s remarkable gift will enable NewYork-Presbyterian to establish a new standard of care for pregnant women and their families,” said Dr. Steven J. Corwin, president and CEO of NewYork-Presbyterian. “Our vision is for The Alexandra & Steven Cohen Hospital for Women and Newborns to serve as an international model of best-in-class maternal and neonatal medicine, pairing brilliant physicians with leading-edge technology to deliver high-quality, compassionate care to mothers and their families.”

“Every child deserves access to the highest-quality care, and we know that a child’s health starts with a healthy mother, pregnancy and delivery,” said Alex Cohen, president of the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation. “Steven and I are grateful to be able to help NewYork-Presbyterian build a facility that gives mothers-to-be and their children world-class care and medical services from start to finish.”

The Alexandra & Steven Cohen Hospital for Women and Newborns will be the first of its kind in the New York tri-state area. Set to occupy six floors of the Koch Center, the facility will comprise 246,500 sq. ft. and feature 75 private antepartum/postpartum private rooms and well-baby bassinets, 60 private neonatal intensive care bassinets, 16 labor and delivery rooms, five C-section operative suites, five post-acute care bays and 14 ultrasound rooms, which will offer state-of-the-art visualization. It is set to be the first facility in New York City to have MRI capabilities and an operating room in its neonatal intensive care unit.

From their first appointment through their final postpartum follow-up, patients at The Alexandra & Steven Cohen Hospital for Women and Newborns will receive the most advanced, compassionate care. Weill Cornell Medicine physicians at the Hospital will work across disciplines and specialties to treat even the most complex conditions that can arise in maternal-fetal and neonatal care, including neonatal neurologic disorders and failure to thrive syndrome. Patients will work with navigators to coordinate all of their appointments, and will be able to tailor their birth plan to include a variety of techniques in a warm, hospital setting.

“The care that Weill Cornell Medicine physicians deliver to our youngest patients and their mothers is unparalleled,” said Dr. Laurie H. Glimcher, the Stephen and Suzanne Weiss Dean of Weill Cornell Medicine. “This extraordinary gift will enhance our vital work and ensure that newborn babies get the healthiest start to their lives. We are profoundly grateful to Alex, Steven and the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation for their incredible generosity.”

The $75 million gift from the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation is the latest in a strong history of support for programs at NewYork-Presbyterian. The Alexandra & Steven Cohen Pediatric Emergency Department at NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, opened in 2011, is a world-class facility that treats some 60,000 pediatric patients per year in Washington Heights.
